Session One – The New GCSESeptember 2009 Context 3 Home & Environment Home & Local Area Special occasions celebrated in the home home, town, neighbourhood & region, where it is and what is it like Environment current problems facing the planet being environmentally friendly within the home & local area
Session One – The New GCSESeptember 2009 Context 4 Work & Education School/College & Future Plans what school/college is like pressures and problems Current & Future Jobs looking for and getting a job advantages & disadvantages of different jobs
Session One – The New GCSESeptember 2009 Listening & Reading – 20% each Foundation & Higher Level Listening - 5 minutes reading time beforehand No dictionaries All questions in English All answers – non-verbal or other – in English
Session One – The New GCSESeptember 2009 Speaking – 30% ( 3th November/ 8th April) ( Healthy Life/ Leisure) no Foundation/Higher distinction differentiation by outcome, not by task two tasks, each a form of dialogue each task 15% each task 4 – 6 minutes tasks can be Board’s or teachers’ own BUT same tasks cannot be used for speaking & writing not all tasks need to be recorded Tasks marked by teacher, moderated by Board
Session One – The New GCSESeptember 2009 Speaking - Preparation general teaching and learning in preparation of task discuss task with student student produces plan – Task Planning Sheet plan can be in target language plan in bullet points & no more than 40 words teacher comments on plan using feedback sheet draft recordings may be made, but no comments in actual test, student must use Planning Sheet etc no access to drafts
Session One – The New GCSESeptember 2009 Speaking - Exemplar Task Cinema You are going to have a conversation with your teacher about the cinema. Your teacher could ask you the following: what sort of films do you like & why? who is your favourite actor/actress? Describe him what is your opinion on going to the cinema? do you think it is better to go to cinema or watch a DVD? describe your last visit to the cinema what are your plans for next weekend? ! (respond to something you have not prepared) e.g. What do you plan to see at the cinema in near future?
Session One – The New GCSESeptember 2009 Speaking - Exemplar Task Interview with a Celebrity You are being interviewed by your teacher. You will play the role of a celebrity and your teacher will be the interviewer. Your teacher could ask you the following: tell me about yourself – personal information, name ,age etc. what is a typical day like for you? how do you spend your free time? what were your ambitions when you were younger? how do you feel about the publicity you receive? ! (respond to something you have not prepared) what are the best things about being a celebrity?
Session One – The New GCSESeptember 2009 Writing – 30% (29th June/ year 11) ( Holidays/ Home) no Foundation/Higher distinction two different types of tasks must be done each task 15% tasks can be Board’s or teachers’ own BUT same tasks cannot be used for speaking & writing tasks will be marked by Board tasks will be done under supervision in school Grades D – G, 200 – 350 words } across the Grades A* - C, 400 – 600 words } two tasks

You could include: The people Their daily life Their attitudes and beliefs Their clothes Their homes Their food and drink Their free time

Grades D-C • Why staying fit and healthy is important • Your experience of sport (or other activities) and why it is good for you • What facilities there are for sport and/or fitness in your town and what people do • Describe an event or activity that you (or others) did in the town recently Grades B-A* • Why staying fit and healthy is important: what the benefits are • What facilities there are for sport and/or fitness in your town and what people do • Describe an event or activity that you (or others) did recently (or will do) in the town • Suggest other events or activities that could be done to encourage others to be more fit and healthy
