Plants Feeling the Winter Burn? PERENNIAL GARDEN DESIGNERS
Winter is pretty much done and hibernation is almost over. As the warmth of Spring approaches, we go around and inspect our yard, particularly our perennial garden design to take inventory of how well our plants managed the cold weather. One of the first things you may observe in the landscape design is how Winter was harsh, particularly on our broad leaf evergreens such as the Laurels, Schip and Otto Luyken. In an article, Are Your Plants Feeling the “Winter Burn”? it says that evergreens, especially those with wide and broad leaves, do not have the advantage of shedding their leaves in the Fall like their deciduous counterparts. The benefit of shedding leaves is a defense mechanism to preserve moisture. Water loss (desiccation) from the pores of the leaves caused by wind, is normal throughout the year.
However, during cold weather, you will notice the evergreen leaves droop or wilt, turn light green or in extreme cases turn brown because the water cannot be drawn up from the frozen ground/soil of your landscape design & construction. At this point, you can do nothing, but wait until Spring and see how severely plants suffer winter burn. To determine how plants have been affected and damaged, take a closer look. If dried and brown, they are most likely withered and dead, but if they are soft and yellow/green they are most likely viable and there's a good chance they'll recover.
We all know the severity of Winter and Spring will tell how much your plants suffer winter burn.
