  1. Clickers Bellwork Korczak Ziolkowski created a 1/34th size sculpture Crazy Horse from which to take measurements for his mountain sculpture. If the side area of his sculpture is 312 ft2, what will the area of the mountain sculpture be? Gutzon Borglum created a similar sculpture whose side area 1/12. If the area of the mountain sculpture, Mt. Rushmore, is approximately 125000 ft2. What is the side area of the smaller sculpture? What is the ratio of the side areas of the Mt. Rushmore sculpture to the Crazy Horse sculpture? 14

  9. Areas of Regular Polygons Section 11.6

  10. The Concept • Today we’re going to talk about figuring the areas of regular polygons • Today’s lesson will borrow liberally from the skills that you learned during the geoboard exercises

  11. In order to correctly address the issue of calculating areas of regular polygons, a few pieces of terminology must be introduced Regular polygons can be inscribed inside a circle of radius r, thus the radius of a polygon is the distance from the center to one of the vertices Terminology The apothem is the perpendicular distance from center of the polygon to any of the sides r θ The central angle of the polygon is the angle formed by the two radii drawn by consecutive vertices, or 360/number of sides

  12. Find the central angle, radius and apothem of the polygon below 10 In use 30 Radius=30 30 a 10

  13. We can use our previous figures to figure the area of this object Area 30 29.5 10

  14. Using the previous example we see the formula take shape Formula 30 28.3 10 Where s*n=Perimeter Either formula works, it just depends on what you are given
