What is Poison Ivy? • Poison Ivy is a plant that can cause a skin rash called allergic contact dermatitis upon contact • It is NOT contagious
Cause • Contact with an oil resin(hydrocarbon secretion) in poison ivy called urushoil • The more urushoil the person comes in contact with, the more severe the rash • Playing in a grassy woodland area
Signs/Symptoms • Red itchy skin • Swelling • Warmth of an infected area • Blisters • Hives • Swelling
Treatments/Cures/Preventions • can be treated with calamine lotion, antihistamines, or hydrocortisone cream to calm the itching and blistering • Do not scratch the infected area • Wash your clothes or any other area that has been touched • Take a shower to remove the bacteria from your skin
