  3. Plot (definition) • Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.

  4. 1. Exposition • This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story. Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main problem).

  5. 2. Rising Action • This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

  6. 3. Climax • Usually the turning point of a story. The main character will change in some way.

  7. 4. Falling Action • All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

  8. 5. Resolution • The story comes to a reasonable ending.

  11. 3 4 2 1 5 Strategies for reading • Read the title. As you read the story you might notice a special meaning. • Keep track of events as they happen. Plot the events on a diagram like this one.

  12. Strategies cont’d • Look for specific adjectives and adverbs that help you visualize the setting – the time and place in which events occur.

  13. Types of Conflict • Two Types: • Internal conflict occurs within a character • External conflict involves a character pitted against an outside force, such as nature, a physical obstacle, or another character.

  14. Types of Conflict • Man V. Man • Jack hunted Ralph through the forest. • Man V. Self • Simon was conflicted: he didn’t know what the right decision would be! • Man V. Nature • Sam and Eric, both severely sunburned, hid from the vicious lightning. • Man V. Society • Janice felt that she was unable to become an actress because she was a woman.
