  1. Adding/Subtracting/Multiplying/Dividing Real Numbers Objective: The students will be able to add/subtract/multiply/divide real numbers.

  2. Key Question • What rules exist for adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing real numbers?

  3. Adding Real Numbers • SAME SIGN: Add numbers together and keep the sign • DIFFERENT SIGN: Subtract numbers (find difference) and keep the sign of the bigger number

  4. Examples • -5 + (-2) 4. 4 + (-8) + (-14) • 1.3 + (-1.1) 5. -2.5 + (-1.2) + (-2.3) 3.

  5. Subtracting Real Numbers When subtracting, change to addition and change everything AFTER • 6 – 9 • 18 – (-25) • 3.

  6. Rules for multiplication/division of integers If two numbers have the same signs, then the product/quotient is positive. If two numbers have different signs, then the product/quotient is negative.

  7. Examples • (-2)(8) • 2(-4)(-6) 3.

  8. More Examples • For s = -2 and t = 10 • For m = 2 and n = -1

  9. Fractions ADD SUBTRACT MUST find a COMMON Denominator

  10. Fractions MULTIPLY DIVIDE Don’t divide fractions…multiply by the reciprocal! Reciprocal: switch the top and bottom of a fraction
