  1. Welcome to the study of Ecology PowerPoint created by Heather MacLellan

  2. What is Ecology? • Lets look at the word itself. It ends in ‘ology’. What other words have the ending ‘ology’? • It’s the study of how living things and their environment interact.

  3. Living things • There are lots of different types of living things and scientists have grouped them into sections to make it easier to know what everything is. This system of grouping is called scientific classification. • Each section of the classification system has a name.

  4. Lets look closer at the species category. • Species – a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile young. • A species is a really specific group name. For example, frogs. You can talk about frogs as a group, but frogs do not all belong to the same species.

  5. Narrow it down • Frogs can be separated into many specific species – like the african bullfrog • Or the carpenter frog

  6. Your Project (Project created by Ms. Plesha and Ms. Fera) • Each person in our class is about to do an ecological study of a species of their choice. • The information will be presented in a non- fiction information book that you will create. • Your book will have 3 or 4 chapters with information about your species.

  7. Materials and Supplies • For this project, you will need: • 1 inch or ½ inch binder or a duotang • Unlined paper with holes • Lined paper with holes • flash drives to save computer work on.

  8. Step 1. Choose your species • Take time to decide. You will be doing lots of research about your species so you need to make sure that there is enough good information out there for you to use. • Be specific and narrow down your search, make sure that the organism you choose is actually a specific species. (for example, you can’t do frogs because it’s not specific enough. You can do African Tree Frogs because that is a species of frog) • Use the species selection sheet to help you choose your species.

  9. Species guideline sheet The common (English) name of your species: _____________________________ The Latin name of your species: _______________________________ Why have you chosen this particular species? (Write this as a paragraph or in point form) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Write down at least three resources that you have looked at where you have found good, solid information about your species. Use the proper citation format that we have talked about already this year. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  10. Your Homework • Find your species and fill out the species information sheet. Check with me to find out when it is due.
