How to find information about programs? • Graduate Study in Psychology book • around $25 • updated every year • Online – visit the school’s online site • Talk to graduate students enrolled in the program – they can give you insider information / views on the program
How to choose a Program • If it is a Ph.D. program that you are considering, can you get your Master’s Degree along the way? • If you are considering a clinical program, is it APA approved? • Is the school located in a place that you are willing to live for two to six years? • Can you afford it? Do they offer TA / GA ships? • Are the research interests of the faculty compatible with yours? • What is the reputation of the department? • How did they manage you as an applicant (speedy emails, etc.) • For information about the national rankings of various programs, visit the following website: http://www.socialpsychology.org/ranking.htm

Timeline • Now • GRE • Find schools you are interested in (at least 10 –if you can afford this) • Contact schools for information • Make contact with professors / students at schools you are interested in • Request official transcripts • Start personal statement
Timeline • November • Personal statement • Have people read your drafts • Ask letter writers to write you a rec letter • Give them ample notice (at least a month) • Give them materials • Retake GRE (if needed)
Timeline • December • Complete applications (earliest deadlines are Dec 1st) • Keep copies of your materials • Check that rec letters were received • January • Keep submitting applications (if applicable) • Start FAFSA – financial aid

8 Tips for applying • Relax • Be organized! • Allow yourself plenty of time • Follow directions • Be professional • Focus on presentation (proofread!!) • Be yourself • Make back up plans
The deadly sins… • Only giving your letter writers a few weeks notice • Not researching the program you are applying to • Not researching the average GPA / GRE scores for program • Not researching cost of program, cost of living • Not proofreading your statement • Not giving to others to read
