Diversity in Schools: Race & Ethnicity Courtney Floyd 3 July 2012 MEDT 3401-N04
Introduction • Of the many important issues within our classrooms today, race and ethnicity are one of the most important. • Today, many classrooms across the United States are becoming increasingly diverse . • As classrooms become more diverse it becomes more important for teachers to be aware themselves, and to make their students aware as well.
Preparing Ourselves • Explore personal and family histories. • Learn about the history and experiences of diverse groups. • Develop a true appreciation of diversity.
Preparing Our Students • We can use a variety of activities such as: • Music and dance • Sharing traditions • Talk positively. • Provide opportunity.
Reflection • If we start now, while our students are young and impressionable they will be able to apply the skills they learn throughout their lives and make society a better place for everyone.
