Web2.0 is arriving @ your campus…. Mind the gap. Alan Masson, University of Ulster
Personal context • Head of Technology Facilitated Learning @ University of Ulster • VLE – a core provision…. but • Contextually linked with real world services • Library (4i and Trust DR projects) • Practice (CETL for Institutional E-learning Services) • Curriculum Development (Viewpoints project)
2003: Integrating to Library Resourcesor the Library ‘Experience’ Common approach to integration: University of Ulster approach to integration:
Recent e-learning developments • “Enterprising” of VLE • Integration of additional tools and services with VLE • Enhancing “teacher moderated” virtual classrooms • Teaching focus
Recent campus developments • Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) • Wireless connectivity • Development of “social spaces” • Informal learning focus
VLE “teaching” Can use a wide range of available tools (incl. Web2.0): • Packaged tools • 3rd party integrated tools. i.e. @ Ulster: • Confluence, Turnitin, Wimba, ELGG, Library integration tool (incl Athens) • Learner experience defined, managed and monitored by the teacher
VLE teaching can be OR But it is still teacher facilitated
Learning - independent of space and place Continuum of learning spaces………….
Informal learning online • Explosion of Web 2.0 tools • Students use these in their own lives • Functionality transfers to learning • Learners own tools – more advanced than HEI offerings • Added value aspect of a LOT of these tools – social aspects of learning
University challenged? • Students have personal access to technologies and tools that can support their learning. • What services do we (Universities and Colleges) provide our learners to facilitate their “virtual” learning?
Learning Resource Centre • Formal, institution provided learner space • Brings together people and resources • Supports range of “learning” styles • Individual or group • Formal or informal • Resource supported or shared space • Use is defined by learner!
“Things to facilitate learning” Do we provide similar virtual things?
Web2.0 tool challenges • Support and guidance • Inclusivity • Potential legal issues around 3rd party services • Loss of added value information / engagement opportunities • Perceived (lack of) value by fee-paying learners • Do we / should we provide “semi formal” virtual LEARNER services?
Virtual “learner services” benefits • Learner focused and managed • Bridge between formal teaching and personal learning environments • Access to people / resources / tools are facilitated and supported • Learners - participants in resource workflows (tagging, resource lists….) • “spaces” can have defined lifecycles
Cultural challenge Leadership for this “service”? • IT department (it’s technology) • Library (it’s an LRC type resource) • E-learning (it’s e-learning) • Teaching and Learning (it’s to do with learners)
Final reflection • Is there a continuum of “virtual” educational services or is there an “us and them” teaching and learning cultural divide emerging? • If so, do we need think about how to pragmatically bridge this service provision divide?
