What is it? • Post-traumatic stress disorder (or PTSD) is a emotional illness, more specifically a form of anxiety disorder. • The illness is usually developed by a life threatening event or generally just unsafe event. • PTSD also can be a genetic illness. For parents or even grandparents who fought in the war, and got shell shock (another name for PTSD)
Symptoms • Flashbacks and nightmares (acting like the event is happening again). • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. • Bursts of anger. • They have a hard time concentrating and keeping focus. • Substance abuse. • Suicidal thoughts or feelings. • Feeling of betrayal.
Prevention. • The best way to avoid PTSD; is to deal with the trauma when it happens, and reach out for help when it occurs, so that you don’t let it overwhelm you.
Statistics. • Occurrence of PTSD. • in suburban police: 13% • in firefighters: 18% • military veterans: 30% • raped adults: 35% • battered woman: 45% • abused children: 50%
Local help for PTSD. • There aren’t necessarily any resources for people with PTSD. In Cornwall, but in Ottawa, you are able to go to the Ottawa Anxiety and Trauma clinic, where they provide treatment and help.
