Music Industry There are potentially 2 posts here: Slides 2-9 on the record labels Slides 10-12 on New Technology
LQ: What is the current state of the music industry Lesson aims • To examine the conglomerates who own the majors • To understand the relationship between majors and ‘independents’ • To see which companies Universal is linked with (your music video should be by a made up artist who is supposedly signed to the Universal group) • How technology is starting to change the music industry
Record Labels The Big Three
Record Labels – The Big 3 • Universal Music Group - UMG (Vivendi are parent group) the record label mentioned in the brief • Sony (BMG Music Entertainment) • Warner Music Group (Access are parent group) • All are part of MEDIA CONGLOMERATES
Universal Music Group • Part of Vivendi who bought EMI in 2012 (which was considered a major) • Owns Vevo (YouTube) • Owns the following smaller record labels: Geffen, Interscope, Island, Motown, EMI, Def Jam • What other record labels does Universal own that a ‘dance artist might be on ? • Artists signed to Universal include Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Adele
Sony • Giant electronics company, also owns film/television studios and record labels: Arista, Columbia, Epic, J, Jive, RCA • Artisit include: Beyonce, Maria Carey, Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys, Shakira, Britney Spears
Warner Music Group • Part of Time-Warner, a global media conglomerate, which includes AOL, HBO, New Line Cinema, Turner Broadcasting (CNN), and Warner Bros. • Time Warner is involved in magazine publishing, film and television production, internet, cable TV, and music.
Warner Music Group • About 20 record labels • Atlantic Records Group (includes Elektra) • Asylum, East West (so called Indies) • Rhino Records, • Rykodisk • Warner Bros. (includes Reprise and Sire) • Also WEA and Warner/ Chappell Music • Artists signed: Ed Sheerin, Madonna, Coldplay, Wiz Khalefa and Jason Derulo
Why do Conglomerates own and keep so many companies? It isn’t just Big is beautiful (and more powerful), the structure works both ways with record companies. As well as being part of much larger companies able to absorb costs, they also own lots of smaller companies themselves. What might be the reasoning behind this? i.e. Why do you think Universal has other labels ? Specialisation in markets, “local” knowledge, ease of management, to take advantage of new artists and opportunities
Independents Although “indie” now refers to a style of music, it has it’s origin in the term “independent label”. Independent labels previously were seen as an alternative to big labels. They had a reputation for music that was less commercial and more artistically interesting. Independent labels still dominate a significant percentage of the market Some of the reasons for going on an “indie label” would be….. greater creative control. Deciding who you work with creating music, how you shoot your videos, when you tour etc
So which record label of Universal would your artist be on ? Although it is rather early to decide an answer to that question (as you haven’t even definitely decided on a song let alone an artist) it a good idea to have some notion of who your artist would be signed for. You will need this for the Statement of Intent and the sub-genre of dance that your song comes should be appropriate for
Now you could do a separate post discuss New Technology and Music • Changes in technology in recent years have made it much easier for artists to reach out directly to the public. • Record labels are no seen longer as a necessity • Anyone with access to the internet can put their own music on Spotify, Soundcloud,, Youtube and iTunes • They can promote it via Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites
Do you need a record label at all? There are some music ’stars’ who have no record label contracts of any sort but rely on revenue from YouTube, concerts and streaming services Tyler Ward is one such star Other artists rely on branding/ image rights (Rhianna) as well as concert income (Rolling Stones) as much as actual sales of music
Some facts that could be useful When did YouTube start ? When did Spotify begin ? When did downloads become part of the charts and streaming become an indication What is bigger – streaming or downloading ? What was Napster – why was it seen as such a threat to the music industry Has the music industry overcome the threat of downloading ?
The Blog So you must blog about the music industry and Universal in particular, especially which record label is a natural home You could blog about the way new technology is changing the music industry – it might be useful as an indicator of thorough research and possibly could be mentioned in the exam (although the question is about media language and representation)
