  3. Transportation • Stage coaches • Wagon trains but travel had to change- “Manifest Destiny” – coast to coast Video “OLD WEST COVERED WAGONS”

  4. Transportation Improves(pgs. 349 – 351) • Transcontinental Railroad • 1862 Congress provides $ • 2 companies chosen to build Sacramento – Central Pacific Omaha – Union Pacific

  5. Transcontinental Railroad • Union Pacific – hires war veteran, Irish • Central Pacific – hires Chinese immigrants

  12. Little Big Horn (pg. 357- 359) • Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Calvary (210) vs. Sioux/ Cheyenne (2000 total) at the Little Big Horn River in Montana Custer, 210 troops killed(only survivor horse name Comanche)

  13. Battle at Little Big Horn Shocked the country • American Indians won – called Custer’s Last Stand • Warriors do surrender later on- ran out of food/ ammunition Final result- gov. concerned-add more Reservations for all American Indians

  15. Dawes Act • Dawes Act 1887 Congress passed – turn American Indians into farmers If a American Indian excepted- made a citizen of US Could not sell land for 25 years Protecting lands for the Am. Indians By 1924- all American Indians citizens

  16. Wounded Knee • Ghost Dance - religious movement- 1890 belief that the dance would protect – bullets, bring back buffalo, remove settlers This frightened the settlers 7th Calvary arrive at Wounded Knee

  17. Wounded Knee • December 28, 1890 Wounded Knee, South Dakota Cavalry was to disarm Ghost Dancers (many tribes) Someone fired-Am. Indians: 290 dead / Soldiers 25 dead The massacre at Wounded Knee ended fighting between Am. Gov. and Plains Indians.
