2. Brief History of WiMedia • Launched September 2002 as an outgrowth of the IEEE802.15.3 activity. • Over the years evolved into an aggressively active UWB centric organization with the mission statement shown on the next page. Rick Roberts, Intel Corp

Our Mission • "To promote wireless multimedia connectivity and interoperability between devices in a personal area network." • Promote and enable the rapid adoption and standardization of UWB worldwide for high-speed wireless, multimedia-capable personal-area connectivity in the PC, CE and mobile market segments • Provide a neutral and open forum for multiple industry segments to establish requirements, specifications and best practices for usability and interoperability • Promote worldwide UWB spectrum regulations • Develop, maintain, enhance and reference technical specifications including: • PHY and MAC • Convergence architecture to provide coexistence and fairness including support for multiple applications (e.g., Wireless USB, Wireless 1394, IP, etc.) • A protocol adaptation layer for the Internet Protocol • IP-based application profiles • Establish a compliance, certification and interoperability program with compliance test specifications and logos for, and in cooperation with, multiple industry-based organization, such as USB-IF and 1394TA. Where appropriate, establish liaisons with other organizations that develop specifications and standards for networked multimedia products • Establish a consumer brand for easy to install and use application profiles • Educate businesses and consumers about the benefits and applications for wireless multimedia products in a personal network • Foster competition in development of products and services and comply with all antitrust laws Rick Roberts, Intel Corp

5. WiMedia 60 GHz Study Group Mission The 60 GHz Study Group is writing a document that advises the WiMedia board of directors on generic 60 GHz issues. Reference is made to the work done in IEEE802.15.3c.
