  3. Why Do We Need Water?

  4. We need water to… • 1. Facilitate chemical reactions that break down carbs, proteins, and fats • 2. Transport nutrients to body cells and helps carry away cell waste

  5. We need water to… • 3. Lubricates food so it’s easier to digest • Tears lubricate your eyes • Fluid keeps bones from rubbing against each other 4. Regulates body temperature though blood and perspiration

  6. Sources of Water • Water, milk, juice etc… • Food supplies almost as much water as liquids (squash is 96% water where orange juice is 87%, even bread is 36% water)

  7. Can You Drink Too Much Water? • Yes! • Water intoxication is caused when the electrolytes within your body cells are diluted too much

  8. How Do You Lose Water? • 1. Urine – most common source of water loss • 2. Sweat • 3. Breathing • 4. Bowel Waste

  9. How Do You Lose Water? • Diuretics (pills, caffeine, alcohol), illness/vomiting, diarrhea etc… all contribute to increased water loss
