UNECE Trade Facilitation Vision

Dr. Carol Cosgrove-Sacks, Director of Trade Division at UNECE, shares a vision for creating and sustaining international trade facilitation and trade-related standards, tools, and policy.   3. Why Focus on Trade Facilitation? • Offers direct benefits both to Governments and to the business community • Improves economic efficiency, speeds up delivery of goods and reduces costs

  5. Benefits • Enhances competitiveness • Attracts foreign investment • Supports global supply chains • Integral to e-business • Builds transparency • Increasingly important as tariffs are reduced

  7. Trade Facilitation as a Policy Issue • Trade facilitation has a political, economic, business, administrative, technical and technological dimension

  9. Trade Facilitation Strategy • Each factor needs to be considered by a country/region in developing a “trade facilitation strategy” • Both government and the private sector need to be involved in designing a strategy • Strong political will essential for implementation

Priorities • Enhanced focus of UNECE and member States on policy dialogue for trade facilitation and implementation • Technical work to concentrate on two tracks: • Development and maintenance of existing norms and standards • Development of new norms and standards to support the new economy (global supply chains, e-business, etc)

  15. Priorities (cont’d) • Contribute to development of future role of trade facilitation within global economy • Greater inclusiveness/participation of transition and developing economies in UNECE Working Groups and UN/CEFACT

  16. Our Goal .. • To work with all UN member States to share this experience and encourage a more integrated world economy for the betterment of all
