Fundamentals of Strengthening in Ni-Al-Nb --d AlloysSammy Tin, Illinois Institute of Technology, DMR 1006953 Advances in high temperature structural materials have served as key enabling technologies that have been critical to the development of ultra-efficient gas turbines with reduced fuel consumption, and minimization of CO2 and NOX emissions. As part of this NSF GOALI program, we have fabricated new materials that exhibit extraordinary mechanical properties. Accomplishments in year two of the program include the quantification of damage mechanisms governing high temperature behavior and the development of nano- and micro- scale testing techniques that can be used assess the dominant micromechanics operative during deformation. Results from the program are expected to suggest new directions for the development of transformational, high temperature structural materials. Fundamentals of Strengthening in Ni-Al-Nb --d AlloysSammy Tin, Illinois Institute of Technology, DMR 1006953 The educational component of this project centers on introducing Chicago public high school students to career opportunities in science and technology as well as to foster interest and understanding in materials science. Outreach activities included the PI’s participation in the 2011 ASM Chicago Materials Camp (upper left) and 2012 Boeing Scholars Academy (lower left) at IIT. This past year, 100 high school students participated in the IIT Boeing Scholars Academy and immersed themselves in academic and hands-on experiences in STEM fields at IIT. The PI also served as a mentor for the ASM Chicago Materials Camp for high school students that introduces students to Materials Science and Engineering via a series of laboratory demonstrations and hands-on projects
