Chapter 15 • An Introduction to Quality of Life, • Human Rights, and Democratization
Chapter Focus • To What Extent Does Globalization Affect Quality of Life and access to human rights? • Quality of Life: the degree of enjoyment and satisfaction experienced in everyday life that includes standard of living as well as non-material things, such as political and religious freedom, health care, and the environment.
Disparity in Quality of Life • The Quality of Life varies throughout the world. • Not surprisingly it seems to mimic the health of the 3 dimensions of globalization in each region (the haves vs. the have nots). • It also varies across the regions of Canada (Alberta vs. Newfoundland, White vs. Aboriginal)
Quality of Life vs. Standard of Living • Standard of living is only one aspect of quality of life. • It is a measure of the quality and quantity of goods and services that someone has access to. • Quality of life includes non-material things as well: • Clean environment, personal safety, political rights, etc.
The UN Again • The United Nations uses the Human Development Index (HDI) to chart the Quality of Life in each country. • It uses three criteria to determine this: • GDP Index • Life Expectancy Index • Knowledge Index • How do you think Canada fares on this chart?
High ██0.950 and over ██0.900–0.949 ██0.850–0.899 ██0.800–0.849 • Low • ██ 0.450–0.499 • ██ 0.400–0.449 • ██ 0.350–0.399 • ██ under 0.350 • ██ not available • Medium • ██ 0.750–0.799 • ██ 0.700–0.749 • ██ 0.650–0.699 • ██ 0.600–0.649 • ██ 0.550–0.599 • ██ 0.500–0.549
The UN believes human development involves creating an environment in which people can reach their full potential to lead the kind of life they choose. • How does globalization affect (good or bad) people from achieving this in each of the 3 dimensions of globalization?
GDP Per Capita • GDP = Gross Domestic Product = All goods produced and services provided in a country’s economy in a year • Per capita = per person. • That is take the GDP of a country and divide by the population and you have GDP Per Capita • This is the western concept of wealth. How much does each person “have”. • Used as method of calculating standard of living.
Democracy + Globalization = Human Rights? • The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (created by the UN) promotes global awareness and respect for human rights. • The UN cannot enforce member countries to follow these, but there are other alternatives, such as political and economic sanctions. • Can globalization promote human rights? • This year’s summer olympics are being held in China, a notorious offender of human rights. • What are some positive & negative results of this?
SBQ! • Interpret the following two sources, Explain the perspective presented, and discuss the links between the principles of globalization. • Identify and explain how this source could be used to answer the chapter focus questions: • To what extent does globalization affect quality of life and access to human rights?
Democracy is seen as a strong component of human rights • The more power people have in the government the more human rights there are. • Some see strong dictatorships or monarchies as a better way to achieve human rights (one person making decisions vs. everyone)
