  1. Collaboration Among MCHB Training Programs in New Mexico UNM PPC, NM LEND, NM LEEP

Interdisciplinary Leadership in Health Care and Education • Seminars which PPC, LEND, and LEEP trainees all attend • Provides for exposure of trainees to more disciplines • Topics include: Setting Norms, Research, Providing Feedback, Conflict Resolution, Facilitating a Meeting, Interviewing for information, Values Based Decision Making, Family Centered Care, Genetics, Family Advocates, Dentistry

  3. Public Policy Institute • Two day seminar on the legislative process, how to testify and advocate at the local and state level • Includes faculty, trainees, community and family advocates • All trainees together attend a day at the legislature

  4. Clinical Experiences • Trainees from all three programs are encouraged to participate in the following clinics: • SAFE Clinic • Autisim Clinic • Pulmonary Clinics: Cystic Fibrosis clinic, BPD clinic, Pulmonary clinic, Vent/Trach Dependent Clinic, Outreach Clinic

  5. Clinical Experiences • Summer PPC training experience for LEND and/or LEEP trainees • Further training for LEND, LEEP trainees who desire more exposure to pediatric pulmonology

  6. Presentations • Community Posters • Research Presentation • PPC Faculty will be facilitating a case on Care of the Technology Dependent Child to all trainees • Marie Lobo, PPC Nursing Faculty, gives a noon seminar on Children, Families, and Poverty in New Mexico to all trainees

  7. Celebrating Diversity: The Role of Culture in Food Choices, Physical Activity and Obesity • 1 Day conference held on April 28, 2006 • 164 attendees • Sponsored by NM LEEP, NM LEND, UNM PPC, IHS, NM WIC program

Celebrating Diversity: The Role of Culture in Food Choices, Physical Activity and Obesity • Topics: • Reframing Relationships for the Sake of Health • Food Choices, Physical Activity and Obesity among Ethnic and Cultural Groups in the US • Promoting Healthy Eating among Youth: Engaging Communities through Multi-Level Strategies • Cultural Concepts of Health and Wellness

Celebrating Diversity: The Role of Culture in Food Choices, Physical Activity and Obesity • Communicating with Clients and Families: Interviewing Skills • Working Together: Professionals and Community Health Representatives • Coping with Media Influences • Culturally Based Successful Programs to Prevent Obesity • Culture Issues in Pediatric Obesity • Helping Families Cope with a Dangerous New Culture: Food, Eating and Body Image

  10. Interdisciplinary Training Advisory Board • In the past each program has had a separate advisory board with many of the same individuals from families and the community • This year we are having a combined meeting with faculty, trainees (current and former), family representatives, youth representatives, other MCH programs, and community representatives

  11. Faculty • NM PPC, LEND, and LEEP faculty meet on the average monthly to discuss individual and group training activities • Faculty from all three programs participate in a 3 day orientation program for trainees • Faculty discuss and collaborate on possible research projects
