  1. HRD Flight Requirements for 2005

  2. HRD Flight Requirements - P-3s(in order of priority) • Operational needs – tasked by NHC • Reconnaissance/Surface Winds • Research opportunities – tasked by HRD/NESDIS • IFEX: Mature storm/Genesis/ Wind Fields • at Landfall • Ocean Winds (equal priority to above) • RAINEX (equal priority to above)

  3. HRD Flight Requirements - G-IV(in order of priority) • Operational needs – tasked by NHC • Synoptic Surveillance • Core Penetration Tests • Research opportunities – tasked by HRD • IFEX: Saharan Air Layer • RAINEX • IFEX: Synoptic Environment of Mature Storm • IFEX: Synoptic Environment of Tropical • Cyclogenesis (interaction with NASA TCSP in • East Pacific)

  4. Flight Pattern Criteria – P-3s • Operational • Figure-4 pattern • Leg lengths extended for surface wind • mapping • Research • 225 research flight hours for HRD • Patterns dependent on module • Flight patterns will be available in • Hurricane Field Program Plan

  5. Flight Pattern Criteria – G-IV • Operational • Targets defined as maximum forecasted DLM • wind field variance at obs time from GFS • All drops must be over open water and are generally dropped at a resolution of 222 km • Flight tracks are limited to 8.5 h when plane • recovers in continental US, 8 h at St. Croix and • Barbados, 7.5 h in Bermuda • Missions commence at 1730 and 0530 UTC • Generally do not have clearance to overfly • Cuba, Hispaniola, or Central America • Research • 45 research flight hours for HRD • Patterns dependent on module • Flight patterns will be available in Hurricane Field • Program Plan
