Sandcastle CartesianPlane Curriculum Project for Lamar University Computing Institute for K-12 Teachers 2014 Cori Coburn-Shiflett, M. Ed. Educational Technologist Georgetown ISD (Georgetown, TX)
Curriculum Standards • TEKSTexas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Mathematics (7.7A) (7) Geometry and spatial reasoning. The student uses coordinate geometry to describe location on a plane. The student is expected to: (A) locate and name points on a coordinate plane using ordered pairs of integers • Common CoreGraph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems. 5.G.A.1 Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).
Concepts in SNAP Project • The 4 Quadrants on the Cartesian Plane are reviewed • Student helps Spike the Starfish decorate his Sandcastle by correctly placing shells in the designated Quadrant • Introduces students to SNAP coding that allows them to manipulate Sprite characters on the STAGE (Cartesian Plane).
Objectives Students will be able to identify with 100% accuracy: • X axis • Y axis • Origin • All 4 Quadrants on the Cartesian (Coordinate) Plane
Vocabulary in Curriculum • X-Axis • X-Coordinate • Y-Axis • Y-Coordinate • Quadrants • Plane • Cartesian Plane (Coordinate) • Coordinates • Ordered Pair • Point • Origin
Concept Covered from Standards There are four Quadrants 1) I (+,+) 2) II (-,+) 3) III (-, -) 4) IV (+,-)
My Lessons Learned • For me, using MP3 files for sound had a higher percent success rate vs WAV files • Do read the SNAP! Manual located at http://byob.berkeley.edu/SnapManual.pdfAlthough technical, it is a great start to understanding. • Save, save, SAVE your work often! • Planning your project ahead of working saves time and keeps you focused on the outcome
Required Project Resources • SNAP! Online(http://byob.berkeley.edu/ ) • Audio Editor (Adobe Auditions used) • Freesound Website (http://freesound.org ) • Graphic Editor (PhotoShop used)
Additional Resources • Cartesian Plane Cartoon by Time & Moby • Purple Math Coordinate Plane Module
