Sizes and Lengths of Elastic Wraps • Single Length • 2 inch • 3 inch • 4 inch • 6 inch • Double Length • 4 inch • 6 inch
Basic Compression Wrap • Maintain a herringbone pattern (perfectly aligned x’s) as you wrap. • Apply tight enough to offer slight support and compression • Start at distal part of extremity and work towards the heart • Begin with a complete revolution, then wrap at a upward angle behind the injured area and then downward to create an x. • Repeat this pattern, overlapping by ½ width, with the injury located in the middle of your wrap • Determine tightness with 2 fingers by pulling upward under an x. Wrap should give about 2 inches • Check pulse and capillary refill when finished
Basic Compression Wrap with Horseshoe • Place a horseshoe shaped piece of material around the malleolus (ankle bone) • Apply basic compression wrap • Pattern: ∙ Once around foot (close to toes) ∙ Once around lower leg close to the sole as possible ∙ Again around foot ½ width towards ankle ∙ Again around lower leg, ½ width towards knee ∙ Continue until the heel is open (approx. 3 revolutions around foot and lower leg ∙ Make diagonal closing in heel and complete wrap up lower leg • When completed, secure with piece of tape
General Padding • Where to pad: • Any area of swelling, use a pad with an elastic wrap to apply compression. *This should not cause more pain! • Any areas susceptible to trauma
Applying an Arch Pad • Draw and outline of the athlete’s arch in ball point pen. • Press a piece of padding against the ink pattern on the arch to transfer the pattern • Cut out the pattern • Application: • Place the pad underneath the insole of the shoe • Tape the pad to the arch using a simple arch taping technique
