  2. ELEMENTS OF DRAMA • Drama is different from other forms of writingbecause it is written to be performed. When you read a drama, you should imagine that you see and hear the action of the play. However, like other forms of writing, drama includescharacters- a person or animal in thestory, poem, or play. It oftenalsoincludes a conflict, or a problem between two characters or forces. Like other forms of writing, drama has a theme, or main idea.

ACT- a majorunit of action in a play; usuallydividedintoscenes • SCENE- a unit of action in a play that takes place in one setting • DIALOGUE-the conversationamongcharacters in a story: the words that characters in a playspeak. • SCRIPT-the written text of the play; the words of each character in a script are next to the character´sname.

  4. STAGE DIRECTIONS-notes byplaywrights describing suchthings as setting, lighting, soundeffects, and how the actors are to look, behave, move, and speak • SET-the making of the stage that tells the time and place of the action • PROP-a piece of equipmentused on stageduring a play

  5. TYPES OF DRAMA • DRAMA-a word that is used to tell that the playtalks about something serious • COMEDY-a form of drama that has a happy ending • TRAGEDY-a play that ends with the suffering or death of one or more of the maincharacters

  6. A drama is often written to be performed on a stage. However, a drama can be written for other reasons too: • SCREENPLAYS-scripts from which movies are made • TELEPLAYS-types of screenplays written for television; it usually has more scenechangesthan a stageplay • RADIOPLAYS-are written for radio usually with soundeffects, but not lighting or stagingdirections

  7. LITERARY TERMS PLAYWRIGHT-authorof a play • PUN-a jokeformedby a play on words • DRAMA-a storytoldthrough the words and actions of characters, written to be performed • SETTING-a story´s time and place • PLOT-the series of events in a story

  8. NOVEL-fiction that is book-length and has more characters and detailthan a short story • DRAMATIZATION-the acting out in drama form of a real-lifeevent or another form of literature
