Narration • Frame narrative: • Lockwood, is speaking about his experiences with present-day Heathcliff and he is being told stories by the housekeeper, Nelly, about Heathcliff’s past. • Nelly’s narration includes intervals of narration by Catherine and Heathcliff.
Narration • The main narrator is Lockwood, a naïve gentleman who is renting a room at Wuthering Heights from Heathcliff. • However, he learns the story in part from a young maid and mainly from Ellen, who was CatherineEarnshaw’snurse when she was young. • The diversity of narrators not only gives a sense of distance from the story but also may make the reader question the validity of the facts that are given.
Setting • In the late winter months of 1801, Lockwood rents a manor house called Thrushcross Grange in the isolated English country moors. • He meets Heathcliff at the isolated, stormy countryside of Wuthering Heights, four miles away from the Grange. • Upon meeting Ellen “Nelly” Dean, she tells him the past story of the Earnshaw’s and Linton’s, which includes the story of Catherine and Heathcliff. Lockwood writes down his recollections of her tale in his diary, which makes up the main part of Wuthering Heights.
Setting • The moorland that Emily Brontë describes is a combination of areas that she knew such as the moor around Haworth where she spent most of her life, the Shibden valley where she worked, and the countryside near Cowan Bridge where she lived briefly as a child. But it seems likely that Haworth was the intended position for Wuthering Heights and the Gimmerton valley. In chapter 4, MrEarnshaw walks sixty miles to Liverpool from the Heights; according to my route map, the distance by road from Haworth to Liverpool is 63 miles.
