Piety – Plan and Prayer • Matthew 6:1-18 (p.737) • 3 examples (and more!)
Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. That is why it is just no good asking God to make us happy in our own way without bothering about religion. God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing. CS Lewis, Mere Christianity, p.54
Daily praying and religious reading and churchgoing are necessary parts of the Christian life. We have to be continually reminded of what we believe. Neither this belief nor any other will automatically remain alive in the mind. It must be fed. And as a matter of fact, if you examined a hundred people who had lost their faith in Christianity, I wonder how many of them would turn out to have been reasoned out of it by honest argument? Do not most people simply drift away? CS Lewis, Mere Christianity, p.125
A Little More on Prayer • Focus on God. • Trust God. God knows what we need before we pray. • Family in God. • Prioritize God. Glorify, Kingdom, Needs, Forgiveness, Temptation, Glorify
Do It for God • Should we still fast? YES. • Fasting reminds us we have desires that can hurt us. • Do it for God alone – loving Him more and more. • Shine or Hide? • “Genuine love is always self-forgetful.” Bonhoeffer
