Preparing to Make the Pathway Decision: Destinations that Fit! • Consider interests, strengths and learning styles • Today many pathways may lead to the same destination: eg. articulation from college to university. • Attend Open houses at schools, job shadow, read program guides, do web searches. • Talk to teachers, employers, guidance counsellors, vocational counsellors. • Prepare for financial cost of programs

  4. Success after High School • Passion for the program: the right fit • Be resourcful: find the right help • Resilence: flex and problem solve • Read the Material: emails, key dates • Organize: time, money, work and play • Attend all classes, labs,tutorials

  5. CollegePathway • Applied Degrees at College • Joint Degrees or Collaborative Degrees between a college and an university • Diploma ( 2 years college) • Advanced Diploma ( 3 years college) • Certificate ( 1 year college) • Graduate Certificates • Apprenticeships • Coop Programs

University Pathway • General Bachelor’s Degree: 3 years • Honours Bachelor’s Degree: 4 years maintaining % average. • Joint or Collaborative Degrees: Take courses partially at college and partially at university • Professional Degrees: Medicine, Law, Education • Advanced Degrees: Masters, PhD.

  7. Apprenticeship Pathway • Working with a Trades person to train • Attending a college for in school portion of Training • Accumulating hours of work and levels of school training • Taking the certification exam for Journeyperson

  8. Workplace Pathway • Resume building • Job Preparation and Job search • Connecting with Employment centre • Volunteering as evidence for citizenship • Build references • Take cooperative education courses at high school

Timelines • January 16, 2013- Deadline to apply to University • February 5, 2013: Last day to submit changes to University application • February 1, 2013- Deadline to apply to college for equal consideration • December 21nd,2012- North Grenville student’s deadline to apply in order to avoid delays in processing application!!

College Online Applications • www.ontariocolleges.ca • How to apply tutorial is on the ocas website: http://www.ocas.ca/documents/applicant-tutorial-eng.pdf • NGDHS website has tutorial pdf • Applicant needs SIN #, OEN# and can make their own username and password • $95 is the cost for 5 spaces on the application. Limit to 3 programs at one college. • Students who wish to apply to college must tell Guidance

  12. College Admission Requirements • OSSD • Marks and required courses (seldom use semester 2 final marks) • Questionnaire, essay • Resume, references • Portfolio, auditions • Admission tests ( math,science,english) • Work, volunteer, life experiences • Information sessions, interview

University Online Application • www.ouac.on.ca/ouac-101: Application website, tutorials to help you apply. • http://www.electronicinfo.ca: Electronic Info will assist in course requirements, cut off averages and much more! • $130 for 3 Universities and $44 for each additional choice. • Students will be given a PIN from OUAC to apply on line. • All students who wish to apply must tell guidance. • NGDHS website has tutorial in pdf

  14. University Admissions • OSSD • Average calculated on 6 Grade 12 4U or 4M courses. Some Univ. calculate differently for admissions and scholarships. • Cut off averages may be viewed at www.electronicinfo.ca. • Required courses for degrees. • Portfolio, essays, Personal statements, personal information forms.

  15. Offers of Admission University: Conditional offers will roll out over the spring, multiple rounds up to May 29th,2013. Early conditional offers based on high grade 11 marks: December/January Must respond to offers starting June 3, 2013 Respond through “Review and Change your Completed Application”. College: Earliest conditional offer: Feb1, 2013, then multiple rounds up to end of April 2013. Must respond by May 1st 2013 to an offer. The last Yes sticks! Oversubscribed programs Or programs requiring portfolios etc. will be the latest to make offers. Colleges and Universities consider Gr.11 final marks when no grade 12 grade is available.

  16. Apprenticeships • www.apprenticesearch.com • OYAP uses hours completed from Coop in High School toward full apprenticeship hours after graduation. See Guidance to find out more.

  17. Apprenticeship and Pre-Apprenticeship programs • Some colleges have 1 year certificate programs to give students a set of skills in a trade. This is good for student who cannot find a training work site. May be transferable towards the hours for Full Apprenticeship. • Some colleges offer in-school portions for full apprenticeships in 8 week blocks. • Students will earn as they learn in their trade then schedule time to attend the college for each block of in- school training.(collect UI) • Workplace courses may be acceptable for some of the programs. Check with each college in the apprenticeship section.
