Positives to Globalization -- Productivity grows more quickly when countries produce goods and services in which they have a comparative advantage. Living standards can go up faster.-- Global competition and cheap imports keep a lid on prices, so inflation is less likely to derail economic growth.-- An open economy spurs innovation with fresh ideas from abroad.-- Export jobs often pay more than other jobs.-- Unfettered capital flows give [the west] access to foreign investment and keep interest rates low.
Negatives to Globalization • Millions of [citizens of the developed world] have lost jobs due to imports or production shifts abroad. Most find new jobs--that pay less.-- Millions of others fear losing their jobs, especially at those companies operating under competitive pressure.-- Workers face pay-cut demands from employers, which often threaten to export jobs.-- Service and white-collar jobs are increasingly vulnerable to operations moving offshore.-- Employees can lose their comparative advantage when companies build advanced factories in low-wage countries, making them as productive as those at home.
Global Trade • Global trade is the exchange of goods and services on a global scale. • Companies that focus on functioning in multiple countries around the world are known as TRANSNATIONAL corporations, these are companies that provide the sale of goods or services in two or more companies. • Transnational companies are often very successful business that are highly identifiable by name, logo, and reputation. This is largely due to the companies’ increased customer base. • Can you think of some companies that might be transnational companies?

Globalization Affecting Social Aspects of Society • Society: a group of people who form an ordered community centred on kinship, an ideology, a religion, a language, or a particular world view. • It does not mean that everything in the society is the same, but that there are shared ties among the people. • For example, as Canadian citizens we are all a part of Canada’s society.
Globalizing affects on Who You Are? • Trends and fades may come and go, but they certainly leave their mark on society as these movements pass from society to society. • Global trends can include fashion, music, movies, and television. • For example, the music genres of Rap, Metal, Punk rockhave created their own sub-cultures including language, clothes, and attitude. These sub-cultural fades can be seen all over the world in their own unique ways. • What other global trends can you think of ?
Television and globalization • Television is one of the many globalizing technologies that have drastically changed the world. • Television brought the world into the home in a way that the radio or newspaper never could. It appealed to all ages. • It is one of the most powerful mediums in the world today
Television and a global village. • Canadian Marshall McLuhan, argues the a television in nearly every home has helped create a “global village” . • He argued in the 1960s that television had the potential of bringing virtually everyone in the world together. Connected and informed of one another through the television. • Today, over 1 billion television sets around the world entertain us. Bringing news, TV shows, and information from all around the world into our homes. Perspectives: According to this perspective, television has the ability to change and shape society. Do you agree with this opinion? How might you be influenced by what you view on TV?
Who has control over the Air waves? • With the growth of television, broadcasting companies have grown into large trans-national corporations that provide television service across the globe. • Some people argue that an obvious American bias, or perspective, is presented in much of what is broadcast. Meaning an obvious American message is sent around the world. • Some countries, such as Iran, are that concerned foreign biases will affect the traditional values of their society. • Do you agree or disagree that this American bias exists?
Globalization Affecting Political Aspects of Society • How does globalization affect political aspects of people’s lives? • Political decisions can be influenced by global trends, as seen today • with the weak economy in the Europe Union, • By international pressure on countries such as Iran or North Korea • Localized civil movements such as those the Wall Street Occupation movement or the democratic movements in Egypt, Libya, and Syria.
Global Political Change • Political globalization can be more than economic or humanitarian efforts. • For example: • Democracy ( government elected and run by the people) is one such example of a political idea that has spread all around the world. • Those who believe in democracy, believe that by bring people the freedom of choice, also brings a higher standard of living and happiness to society.
Continued • As societies are exposed to new and different political ideas of others, they adopt some and may make changes to their existing governing system. • Read pages 21-23 to explore how political globalization influenced change in East Timor • Homework: Upon finishing the reading ( pages 22-23) complete questions 2 and 3 on page 23.
