Two Levels of English Proficiency • BICS • Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills • CALP • Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency
BICS: Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills • Conversational • “Playground language • Informal • Simple grammar and vocabulary • Acquired in 1-2 years
CALP: Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency • School language, textbook language • Formal • Complex grammar and vocabulary • Acquired in 4-7 years
Who Receives ESL Services? Step One: Children are identified • Home Language Questionnaire • NYSESLAT Scores from previous year
Who Receives ESL Services? Step Two: Testing of Skills ●Speaking ●Listening ●Reading ●Writing
When Do Children Go to ESL? Depending on the student’s proficiency and the school schedule, a student attends ESL • 5 days a week for 35-75 minutes a day * Classroom teachers know when their students will be out of the room. They plan their lessons accordingly. For special class activities, the children remain in the room. They attend all special classes like art, music, physical education, etc.
Where Do the Children Attend ESL? • In ESL classrooms in small groups • In their own classrooms

How Do We Teach English? We use: • Books (literature, poetry, fiction and non-fiction, workbooks, textbooks, dictionaries, atlases) • Arts & Crafts • Science Experiments& Cooking Projects • Language and Math Games & Activities • Maps, Globes & Charts • Drama, Music, Dance & Movement • Computers

ESL STARElementary Extended Day Program • WHO: 3rd, 4th, 5th English Language Learners • WHEN: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays 3:30 – 5:30pm October 15th – June 13th • WHERE: Guggenheim School • WHAT: Free homework help and reading, writing, and vocabulary support ****FREE BUSING IS PROVIDED!****
