Recognising Positive Achievement Arrangements National 4/5
Recognising Positive Achievement Arrangements • Support candidates who receive a ‘No Award’ (Band 8/9) in the Course Assessment at National 5 • Allows candidates to achieve the Course Award at National 4, providing they have passed: • All Internally-Assessed Units at National 5 • Added Value Unit at National 4 • Numeracy/Literacy Unit (if applicable) • Candidates must have been entered for and attempted at least one component of the National 5 Course assessment
RPA Arrangements contd. • There has to be a hierarchical/corresponding Course in place at National 4 • English , Gàidhlig and Mathematics Courses at National 4 include a Literacy or Numeracy Unit, but the corresponding Courses at National 5 do not. To be eligible for RPA in these Courses the candidate must also have: - Pass in the National 4 Added Value Unit - Passin the Lit/Num Unit at N4 or N5 *Not applicable to Lifeskills Mathematics Course
This example demonstrates a candidate who has already achieved a Pass in the Literacy Unit at National 5 and the Added Value Unit at National 4. The Centre has resulted both Units prior to August certification:
In August 2014, this candidate receives a ‘No Award’ (Band 8/9) in the National 5 Course Assessment • This candidate is eligible for RPA as she has completed all of the internally-assessed Units within the English Course at National 5 • Centre previously resulted the Literacy Unit at National 5 and the Added Value Unit at National 4, therefore, SQA will automatically award the National 4 Course on results day
Centre use of RPA Prior to August Certification: Mathematics
This example demonstrates a candidate who has already achieved a Pass in the Numeracy Unit at National 5 and the Added Value Unit at National 4. The Centre resulted both Units prior to August 2014 certification:
In August 2014, this candidate receives a ‘No Award’ (Band 8/9) in the National 5 Course Assessment • This candidate is eligible for RPA as she has completed all of the internally-assessed Units within the Maths Course at National 5 • Centre previously resulted the Numeracy Unit at National 5 and the Added Value Unit at National 4 • SQA will automatically award the National 4 Course on results day
Example: Centre use of RPA Post Certification: Geography
This candidate receives a ‘No Award’ (Band 8/9) in the National 5 Geography Course Assessment in August 2014 • The candidate had passed all the internally – assessed Units at National 5 • In this instance, SQA will automatically create a National 4 Course entry for the candidate • The centre then enters the candidate for the Added Value Unit and submits a Pass result on completion of the assessment. SQA will send an updated certificate for this candidate • Automatically-generated National 4 Course entries will be held open on the system until April the following year
Although this candidate has passed the Added Value Unit at National 4, they receive a Grade D in the Course Assessment Therefore, this candidate is not eligible for RPA
Report Notifications • In August, we will send you a report to inform you of all your candidates for whom we have automatically created a Course entry at National 4 • The candidates in this report will have received a band 8 or 9 in their National 5 Course assessment and passed all the internally-assessed Units at National 5 • For each National 4 Course entry, the report will list the candidates’ names and SCNs and will indicate ‘P’ where the candidate has been awarded the National 4 Course • Where the candidate has not been awarded the National 4 Course, the field alongside the candidate’s name will be blank • These candidates will be eligible for a National 4 Course award, provided you take the necessary action
National 4 to National 3 Arrangements • If a candidate achieves all of the Units of a National 4 Course, except the Added Value Unit, it is possible for that candidate to achieve the corresponding Course at National 3, providing: • Centre enters the candidate for the National 3 Course - 23 May 2014 for schools 2 June 2014 for colleges (This is to ensure that it is included in the August certification process) • Please note that it is not necessary to withdraw the candidate from the corresponding National 4 Course. If the National 4 entry is not being withdrawn, the National 3 entry should be processed by exception
