What does young forest habitat offer? FOOD AND COVER!
Before the Europeans got here . . . Northeastern forests were 7-15% young forest in pre-Colonial times.
Before the Europeans got here . . . Native Americans used fire to manage wildlife habitat and food sources.
Our forests today PA forests contain ~5% young forest; in New England, it drops to only ~2%.
Species declines The woodcock population has declined by 56% since the early 1970s, with a steady annual decline of 2-4% across its range.
Species declines Golden-winged warblers have declined by 6.8% per year since 1970 and 16% per year since 1990 in Pennsylvania.
What about mature forest species? “Most but not all, forest species were captured at higher rates in cuts than in forests.” (Stoleson, 2013, in The Auk)
