AP-assisted Service Discovery Date: 2013-07-15 Authors: Betty Zhao et. al., Huawei
Use Case Analysis • Use Case Keywords: Service provided by associated device • In AP densely deployed scenario, STA can provide its service through different APs to different PAD STAs as needed. • STA may not get associated with any one of the surrounding APs. • STA can not get associated with multiple APs at the same time. Betty Zhao et. al., Huawei
Issue • Assumption: AP has knowledge of the STAs within communication range, either authenticated/associated or NOT authenticated/associated, and their offered services. • PAD STA tries to discover service through AP before authentication/association. • An unauthenticated/unassociated STA within the AP communication range can provide the service, and AP knows that. • But AP can not give a clear answer to PAD STA whether the service is available until the STA has successfully authenticated/associated. • Issue: How does the STA know when to get authenticated/associated with AP for providing specific service? Current Authentication/Association Procedure STA AP Authentication Request Authentication Procedure Authentication Response Association Request Association Procedure Association Response Betty Zhao et. al., Huawei
Proposed Solution • Allow AP to trigger the authentication process for the STA with service which is demanded by PAD STA, and then the STA can complete the follow-up association process as normal. • Two examples: STA AP STA AP TBD command Modified Authentication Request Authentication Request Modified Authentication Response Authentication Response Association Request Association Request Association Response Association Response Betty Zhao et. al., Huawei
