PORTFOLIO DENTAL EXAMINATION • Resulted from a collaboration between: • Dental Board of California • California Dental Association • Six California Dental Schools • Professional Psychometric Studies • Resulted from good timing: • Licensure by credential – 2003 • Licensure through WREB – 2005 • Licensure by PGY 1 – 2007 • Two DDS in State Legislature
PORTFOLIO DENTAL EXAMINATION • Resulted in Passage of AB1524 (Hayashi) • Signed into law by Governor in Sept 2010 • Effective January 1, 2011 • Eliminated traditional Clinical Licensing Examination • Established Licensure by Portfolio for graduates from California Dental Schools

PORTFOLIO DENTAL EXAMINATION • 40 Oral examinations and treatment plans must include evidence of: • Assessment of a patient’s medical and dental history • Development of problem work-up • Development of alternative treatment plans, when appropriate • Identification of a definitive treatment plan accepted by patient and clinical faculty that addresses all or part of the patient’s treatment needs

PORTFOLIO DENTAL EXAMINATION • Required Competency Examinations (final year of dental training) “Each competency examination will be graded in accordance with the Board’s grading criteria on forms prescribed by the Board. The competency examination will be signed by one of the school’s faculty portfolio examiners for the prescribed competency.”
