  2. SELC Essay Introduction Structure Introductions have a particular structure – an order that you use to introduce what you will be writing in your essay. First, you make STATEMENTS (your answer to both parts of the question. You should include the name of the film + director you will be writing about.) Then you EXPLAINthese statements (add extra details that will convince the person reading the essay, that these statements are TRUE.) Then you LIST the three points you will make in your body paragraphs (list them in the same order they will appear in the body of your essay. Make sure you have points that will answer both parts of the question.) Finally, you make a COMMENT to sum up what the director has helped you to understand as you watched this film.

  3. SEXC Essay Body Paragraph Structure Essay body paragraphs have a particular structure which you can remember using the letters SEXC. SEXC stands for the order that you write down your ideas in a body paragraph for an essay. Every body paragraph follows the same structure… First, you make a STATEMENT(this will be one of the points you will use to answer the question – these should already be listed in your introduction paragraph.) Then you EXPLAINthat statement in more detail (add details that will convince us your answer is sensible. This may take more than one sentence.) Then you give an EXAMPLEto prove that statement (show us that your answer came from something you saw and/or heard in the film. This make take more than one sentence.) Finally, you make a COMMENTabout what the director was trying to get the viewer to understand by these events. You can also add your own feelings about these events (it is good to have two sentences for your comment.)

  4. Essay Conclusion Structure Conclusions have a particular structure – an order that you use to summarise • what you have written about the director’s purpose for showing certain events in the film • your own ideas about these events in the film. First, you make a STATEMENT that reminds the essay reader of the first statement in your introduction. (You should use synonyms, so that it is a rephrasing, not a direct repeat of your first statement, but means just about the same). Then you SUMMARISE what the director of the film has helped you to understand – use all the information and personal opinion comments you have included in your body paragraphs. This part should have at least two sentences of summary, it may have more! (You should use synonyms, so that it is not a direct repeat of sentences you have already used, but summarises their meaning).
