RAM: Random Access Memory RAM can constantly be changed or erased For example: Type in a story in the computer Both the words and the software instructions for your word processing program is stored in RAM If you shut off your computer without saving it, your story is gone: here today and gone tomorrow! Is the TEMPORARY MEMORY of the computer – forgets at a flick of a switch
ROM: Read Only Memory You use ROM each time you boot up a computer Now ROM is programmed into a computer's chips or it cannot be changed or lost ROM wasn’t built in a day, so it is here to stay Is the PERMANENT MEMORY OF THE COMPUTER

Shutting Down and Booting Up To turn your computer on again, turn on Peripherals first. Once the peripherals are turned on, wait for them to complete whatever initialization they may need. A couple of minutes is typically enough. Turn on the computer itself by hitting the power button. • To shut off your computer, click the arrow next to the lock button and choose “Shut Down”
