The Problem • What? How to create a product that will provide shade for a specified volume autonomously? • Why? Reduce sun burns and keep user cool and happy. • Who? Users who don’t want to constantly have to get up to adjust sun umbrellas as the sun moves through the sky. • Where? By the pool, backyard, resort, anywhere someone wants a shaded area. • When? 12 hour period • How? The SmartShade!
Design Requirements • Must shade a 2’ x 3.5’ x 5’ rectangular prism1 that is 1.5’ above the • ground, while the sun is above 30° from the horizon • 50lbs max for the base2, 51lbs max for the Smart Shade3 • Easy to open – the devices and canopy that will be pushed up in opening • must be under 45lbs4 • Function in winds up to 25mph5 • Must provide 12hrs of shade • Minimum adjustment speed is 120°/minute • Noise volume of the device must be under 60 decibels6 • Material selected for fabrication must be water, rust, and corrosion • resistant • Must have a manual turn on/off option • 1 National Center for Health Statistics • 2 PatioUmbrellas.com • 3 National Institute for occupational safety and health • 4 Canadian National occupational health and safety • 5 Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology • 6 League for hard of hearing
