AL ChemistryTAS SeminarPersonal Experience Sharing LEUNG Chung-keung Group 22 Coordinator
Laboratory Setting • Fixed Seating • Seating plan with names and photos (Do not mismatch) • Adjacent seating for partners
Grouping Students • Student groups of size<10 • Grouping according to seating arrangement • Number the groups
The Yearly Calendar • 3 to 4 rounds in S.6 • 2 to 3 rounds in S.7 • 4 to 5 experiment occasions of in one round • Experiments of similar nature
Pre-Lab Talk: General • Discuss potential hazards, precautions, safety measures, techniques (especially those to be assessed), arrangement within group or table
Pre-Lab Talk: Lab Report • (Optional): Discuss theory, procedure, data, questions, possible discussions
Assessment A (1) • One whole group to be assessed in one occasion • Groups assessed in order • No disclosure to the student being assessed in A area
Assessment A (2) • Stand still for a short while, then • Walk around and watch around • No specific questioning
Assessment A (3) • Note actions and non-actions • Note speed of work • Note data collected • Note handling of apparatus
Assessment A (4) • Note handling of fire and hazardous chemicals
Assessment B (1) • B area to be assessed at the end of one round (may be full report) • Or Groups assessed in same occasions in reversed order
Assessment B (2) • Avoid assessing Areas A and B together • Give grades with clear meanings, but not indicating correlation with score, for example:
Assessment B (3) • A- = No mistake • B+ = Minor mistake • B = Obvious mistake, but acceptable • B- = Obvious mistake, unexpected
Assessment B (4) • C+ = Overall Unsatisfactory • C = Messy, indicating lack of initiative
Assessment C (1) • Late for experiment • Late to submit report • Committing similar error repeatedly • Cannot collaborate with partner (too passive or dominating)
Assessment C (2) • Copying report • Ignoring advices • No gown, no goggle • Taking too much reagent • Not serious with fire or conc. sulphuric acid
Difficulties (1) • Teaching or Assessing • Passive students • Similar reports • Assessing area A, and laboratory safety
Difficulties (2) • Dangerous experiments – Ask the Lab. Tech. to walk around as well • Apparatus broken – first aid kits available, lab. Attendant must not be away
Difficulties (3) • New experiments – must try out first • Organic experiments – high yield and less odour
Workload (1) • Schedule the experiments beforehand • Communicate with the Lab. Tech. • Submission of the report on the next working day • Give more information to students
Work Load (2) • Do not overload with full report • Can choose to give very simple report or not writing any report for ‘excess’ experiments
Work Load (3) • Do not exaggerate the discussion • Marking should be done • Enjoy the experience
