Globes to Maps Ms. Taylor - Geography
The difference between a globe and a map • Globe – round representation of the earth • Map – flat representation of the earth *Globes more accurately show distance. Why?
Cartographers • are mapmakers • use math formulas to transfer information from the round glove to a flat map.
GPS • Many cartographers use a GPS (Global Positioning System) • helps people locate places from coordinates through satellites
Projections • There are many different ways to show the earth on a flat piece of paper. These are called map projections.
Goode’s Interrupted Equal-Area Projection Shows continents close to their true shapes and sizes.
Robinson Projection There are distortions near the poles.
WinkelTripel Projection Continents are not as distorted as they are in the Robinson projection.
Mercator Projection Shows land shapes accurately, but not size or distance.
