  16. “Hybrid” Course Model • Asynchronous features: • Self-paced • Most of direct instruction is static • Recorded course orientation • Self-contained course • Synchronous features: • Live instructor-led review activities • Graded, scheduled peer-peer and peer-teacher interactions • Non-graded, unscheduled peer-peer and peer-teacher interactions • Assessment of higher order thinking in exams

  17. What does it look like? • Language Arts • Writing lab: Drop in & scheduled paper reviews • Rough draft/final draft, peer review • Presentations: Poetry reading, oration • Math • Review Sessions • Show your work • World Languages • One-on-one & group speaking practice • Presentation: authentic literature, creative piece • Higher order thinking in final exam

  18. Why Interaction • Interaction for the sake of interaction doesn’t work! • Tying interaction to learning outcomes does work! ------------- • Take a look at some specific examples in our courses • The same concepts can work in a classroom, blended, or fully online platform

  19. Written/Performance elements on the Final Exam • Variable depending on course • Short answer questions • Short essay • Demonstration of brainstorming • Writing a poem • Demonstration of grammar principles

  20. “Show Your Work” Higher Order Thinking Activities • Included in computer-graded assignments and final exam • Assess higher order thinking by asking students to explain their thought process • Multiple choice questions require students to show and/or explain their work • In the final exam, short answer/show-your-work questions require higher-order thinking • “Explain what would happen to the intersection of the following graphs if…” • “What happens to the graph if you replace the x with (x + 3)?”

  21. One-on-One Speaking • Oral assignment that synthesizes lesson content: • Reading and writing • Grammar and vocabulary • Listening and speaking • Culture aspects • Assignments integrate 5 standards for world language instruction – notably speaking! • Requires higher order thinking: synthesis and creative output
