  2. Dionysus’s Prominent Qualities • Dionysus has a dual nature. On the one hand bringing joy and divine ecstasy and on the other brutal, unthinking rage. Thus, reflecting both sides of wines nature. • If he choses, Dionysus can drive a man mad. • No normal fetters can hold him or his followers. • Like Artemis, Dionysus was rarely present on Mount Olympus. He was normally depicted as wondering through the woods followed by his followers, Bacchants and Maenads.

Dionysus’s role on Mount Olympus • Dionysus was one of the Olympian gods who actually did not live on Mount Olympus but was constantly travelling around the world together with Satyrs and Maenads in order to discover the secrets of winemaking. • Dionysus certainly roves more than the other gods; the traditional picture of him is not one of him sitting sedately on Olympus sipping nectar and listening to the Muses sing. Rather it is one of him roaming through the wilderness, thyrsus in hand, followed by bands of ecstatic women, his Bacchants, and spreading the art of cultivation of vines and of wine-making. Other gods may leave Olympus, but it is not habitual with them as it is with Dionysus.

  4. How Dionysus affected the way Greeks viewed their world • As the God of wine, Dionysus was credited with creating and teaching the art of making wine. • The idea that under the influence of wine, one could feel possessed by a greater power. Unlike the other gods Dionysus was not only outside his believers but, also within them. At these times a man might be greater than himself and do works he otherwise could not. • The festival for Dionysus is in the spring when the leaves begin to reappear on the vine. It became one of the most important events of the year. It's focus became the theater. Most of the great Greek plays were initially written to be performed at the feast of Dionysus. All who took part writers, actors, and spectators were regarded as sacred servants of Dionysus during the festival.

  5. Dionysus in Modern Culture • Being the God of Wine, there are many wineries named after him. • Actor, Stanley Tucci, recently played the role of Dionysus in the 2013 film Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. • Dionysus’s hedonistic behavior can be compared to the behavior of Rock Bands like Aerosmith or AC/DC.
