Dionysus (Bacchus). God of wine. Strange Birth. Only Olympian to be born from a mortal woman. Father was Zeus and the mother was Semele . Hera tricked Semele into asking Zeus to show his true self to her. Upon seeing the god in his full splendor she burnt to ashes.

Strange Birth • Only Olympian to be born from a mortal woman. • Father was Zeus and the mother was Semele. • Hera tricked Semele into asking Zeus to show his true self to her. • Upon seeing the god in his full splendor she burnt to ashes. • Zeus was able to save their unborn son and sewed him into his leg. • Which other god/goddess was born from Zeus?

  3. Fearing Hera’s wrath, Hermes took Dionysus to a hidden valley and had the Maenads raise him. • There he invented wine.

  4. Stolen by pirates • Dionysus was found sleeping on a beach by a band of pirates. • The pirates thought that he was a high born youth so they took him aboard thinking to ransom him. • He tried in vain to convince the pirates that he was a god but they didn’t listen. • Grape vines grew from the sea seizing the ship. • The pirates jumped from the boat and Dionysus turned them into Dolphins.
