1. Devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Devoción Al Sagrado Corazón deJesúsby Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. June 7, 2013 The Apparition of Jesus to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque The devotion which we are studying here owes its origin, from an historical point of view, to our Lord’s apparitions to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, in Paray-Le-Monial, France. Among these there are four of greater importance, which for that reason are commonly called ‘the great apparitions.’

La Aparición de Jesús a Santa Margarita Maria Alacoque La devoción que estamos estudiando hoy se debe al origen desde el punto de vista histórico, de la aparición de nuestro Señor Jesúcristo a Santa Margarita Maria Alacoque de Paray-Le-Monial, Francia.Entre estas, hay cuatro de gran importancia, y por esta razón son llamadas ‘las grandes apariciones.’

3. The First Apparition took place on the feast of St. John the Evangelist, that is, on December 27th, probably in 1673. The Saint relates it as follows: La Primera Aparición fue en la fiesta de San Juan Evangelista, la cual se celebra el 27 de Diciembre probablemente en el año 1673. La Santa relata lo siguiente:

4. ‘One day, being before the Blessed Sacrament, as I had some leisure time, I was so overwhelmed by this Divine presence so as to forget myself and the place where I was. I abandoned myself to this Divine Spirit, surrendering my heart to the might of His love.

5. ‘Un día, cuando tenia tiempo libre, estando frente al Santísimo Sacramento, su divina presencia fue tan fuerte que hasta me olvide de mí misma y del lugar en donde estaba. Yo me abandone a su divino Espíritu, rindiendo mi corazón al poder de su Amor.

6. He, (our Lord), allowed me to recline for a long time on His divine breast, where He disclosed to me the marvels of His love and the unutterable secrets of His Sacred Heart, which He had always concealed from me, until He opened It to me now for the first time. This He did so effectually and so sensibly as to leave me no reason to doubt it, because of the effects which this grace produced in me. It happened, as it seems to me, in this way:

Él, (nuestro Señor), me permitió reclinarme en su divino pecho por largo tiempo, donde Él me revelo las maravillas de su Amor y los secretos que no se pueden expresar, de su Sagrado Corazón,que Él siempre había escondido de mí, hasta que no me quedó razón para dudarlo, por los efectos que la gracia produjo en mí. Sucedió, me parece, de esta manera:

8. ‘He said to me: “My Divine Heart is so passionately inflamed with love for men, and for you in particular, that, not being able any longer to contain within Itself the flames of Its ardent charity, It must needs spread them abroad through your means, and manifest Itself to men, that they may be enriched with Its precious treasures which I unfold to you, and which contain the sanctifying and salutary graces that are necessary to hold them back from the abyss of ruin.

9. Él me dijo: “Mí Divino Corazón esta ardiendo tan apasionadamente con el amor de los hombres, y para ti en particular, que, ya no mas pudiendo contener dentro de Si el fuego de su ardiente caridad, necesita derramarlo por todo lugar por medio de ti, y manifestarse a Si mismo a los hombres, para que estén enriquecidos con sus tesoros preciosos que yo desenvuelvo a ti, y que contiene las gracias salvadoras y santificadoras que son necesarias para detenerlos del abismo de la ruina.

10. And I have chosen you, an abyss of unworthiness and ignorance, for the accomplishment of this great design, that all this may be My work.” Thereupon He demanded my heart, which I entreated Him to take. He took it from my breast and plunged it into His own adorable Heart where it appeared as but an atom in the midst of an immense ocean of fire.

11. Y te he escogido a ti, un abismo de indignidad e ignorancia, para el cumplimiento de este designio tan grande, para que todo esto sea Mí obra.” Entonces demandó mi corazón, que yo le pedí a Él que se lo llevara. Lo tomó de mi pecho y lo sumergió en Su propio y adorable Corazón donde apareció como un atoma en medio de un inmenso mar de fuego.

12. Then drawing it forth, in appearance like a flame in the shape of a heart, He replaced it in my breast, saying as He did so: “Behold, My beloved, a precious pledge of My love; it contains within your breast a little spark of Its most ardent flames, to serve you as a heart, and to consume you up to your last moment….Hitherto you have taken but the name of My slave; I give you now the title of the beloved disciple of My Sacred Heart.”

13. Luego sacándolo, en apariencía como una llamarada en forma de un corazón, Él lo reemplazo en mí pecho, diciendo al hacerlo: He aquí, Mí amada, una promesa preciosa de Mí amor; contiene dentro de tu pecho una chispita de sus más ardiente llamas, para servirte como un corazón, y para consumirte hasta tu último momento....Hasta hoy solo has tomado el nombre de mi esclava; Ahora te doy el nombre de la discípula amada de mi Sagrado Corazón.

14. The Second Apparition took place shortly afterwards, probably on a first Friday of the month, in 1674. La Segunda Aparición tomó parte un poco después, probablemente en un primer Viernes del mes, en 1674.

15. ‘After that, this Divine Heart was shown to me as on a throne of flames, more dazzling than the sun and transparent as a crystal, with that adorable wound, and surrounded with a crown of thorns signifying the pricks caused to It by our sins; and above there was a cross, which meant that from the first moment of His Incarnation,

17. ‘Después de eso,este Sagrado Corazón se me mostró como en un trono de llamas, encandilando mas que el sol y transparente como un cristal, con esa llaga adorable, y rodeado por una corona de espinas simbolizando las punzadas causadas a Él por nuestros pecados; y arriba estaba una cruz, que quería decir que desde el primer momento de Su Encarnación,

19. that is, as soon as this Sacred Heart was formed, the cross was planted in It, and It was filled at once with all the bitterness which humiliations and poverty, pains and scorn, would cause to It, and which His sacred Humanity was to suffer throughout all His lifetime and in His Sacred Passion.

20. eso es tan pronto como este Sagrado Corazón fue formado, la cruz fue plantada en Él, y fue llena inmediatamente con toda la amargura que las humillaciones y la pobreza, los dolores y los desprecios, le causan a Él, y que Su Sagrada Humanidad iba a sufrir por toda Su vida y en Su Sagrada Pasión.

21. ‘And He showed me that it was His great desire of being loved by men and of withdrawing them from the path of ruin into which Satan hurls such crowds of them, that made Him form the design of manifesting His Heart to men, with all the treasures of love, of mercy, of grace, of sanctification and salvation which It contains, in order that those who desire to render Him and procure for Him all the honor and love possible, might themselves be abundantly enriched with those divine treasures of which this Heart is the source.

22. ‘Y Él me mostró que era Su gran deseo ser amado por los hombres y de sacarlos del camino de la ruina a la cual Satanás lanza tantos de ellos, y esto lo hizo formar este designio de manifestar Su Corazón a los hombres, con todos los tesoros de amor, de misericordia, de gracia, de santificación, y salvación que Él contiene, para que así los que desean rendirle homenaje a Él, y procurar para Él todo honor y amor posible, que ellos mismos puedan ser abundantemente enriquecidos con los divinos tesoros de cual este Corazón es la fuente.

23. He should be honored under the figure of this Heart of flesh, and Its image should be exposed. He wished me to wear this image on my own heart, that He might impress in it His love and fill it with all the gifts with which His Heart is replete, and destroy in it all inordinate affections. He promised me that wherever his image should be exposed with a view to showing It special honor, He would pour forth His blessings and graces.

24. Él debe ser honrado bajo la figura del Corazón de carne, y Su imagen debe ser expuesta. Él quiso que yo usara esta imagen en mi propio corazón, para que Él pudiese impresionarlo con Su amor y llenarlo con todos los dones con los cuales Su Corazón esta repleto, y destruir en él todo afecto desordenado. Me prometió que dondequiera que su imagen fuera expuesta con el fin de mostrarle Su honor especial, Él derramaría Sus bendiciones y gracias.

25. His devotion was the last effort of His love that He would grant to men in these latter ages, in order to withdraw them from the empire of Satan which He desired to destroy, and thus to introduce them into the sweet liberty of the rule of His love, which He wished to restore in the hearts of all those who should embrace this devotion.

26. Su devoción era el último esfuerzo de Su amor que les concedería a los hombres en estos últimos tiempos, para poder sacarlos del imperio de Satán que Él deseaba destruir, y así introducirlos a la dulce libertad del mando de Su amor, que Él deseaba reestablecer en los corazones de todos los que abracen esta devoción.

27. ‘Thereupon the Lord of my soul said to me: “These are the designs for which I have chosen you, and for which I have bestowed upon you so many graces and such particular care. I Myself have become your Master, and Director, to prepare you for the accomplishment of that great design, and to entrust you with the great treasures I unfold to you here.” Then, prostrate on the ground, I said to Him with St. Thomas of old: “My Lord and my God!”, being unable to give utterance to my feelings at that moment, and not knowing whether I were in Heaven or on earth.

28. ‘Entonces el Señor de mi alma me dijo: “Estos son los designios para los cuales te he escogido, y por los cuales te he concedido tantas gracias y cuidado particular. Yo Mismo soy tu Maestro, y Director, para prepararte para el cumplimiento de ese designio tan grande, y para encomendarte esos grandes tesoros que te desenvuelvo aquí.” Entonces, postrada en el suelo, Yo le dije con Santo Tomas de antigüedad: “¡Mí Señor y mí Dios!”,sin poder expresar mis sentimientos a ese momento, y sin saber si estaba yo en el Cielo o en la tierra.

29. The Third Apparition took place probably on July 2nd, 1674, on the Feast of the Visitation of Our Lady. La Tercera Aparición tomo lugar probablemente el segundo dia de Julio de 1674, en la Fiesta de La Visitación de Nuestra Señora.

30. ‘One day, as I knelt before the Blessed Sacrament exposed on the altar, after feeling withdrawn within myself by an extraordinary recollection of all my senses and faculties, Jesus Christ, my sweet Master, presented Himself to me, all resplendent with glory, with his five wounds shining like so many suns. From all parts of His Sacred Humanity there issued flames but especially from his adorable breast, which was like a furnace. Opening it, He showed me His loving and lovable Heart as the living source of those flames.

31. ‘Un día, al estar de rodillas ante el Santísimo Sacramento expuesto en el altar, después de sentirme retirada dentro de mi misma por una recolección extraordinaria de todos mis sentidos y facultades, Jesucristo, mí dulce Maestro, se presentó ante mí, con todo resplandor de gloria, con sus cinco llagas brillando como tantos soles. De todas partes de su Sagrada Humanidad salían llamas pero especialmente de Su adorable pecho, que era como un horno. Abriéndolo, Él me mostró Su Corazón amable y amado como la fuente viva de esas llamas.

32. Then He revealed to me all the unspeakable marvels of His pure love, and the excess of love He had conceived for men from whom He received nothing but ingratitude and contempt. “This is more grievous to Me,” He said, “than all that I endured in my Passion. If they would only give Me some return of love, I should not reckon all that I have done for them, and I would do yet more if possible. But they have only coldness and contempt for all My endeavors to do them good. You, at least, can give Me the happiness of making up for their ingratitude, as much as you can.”

33. Entonces me reveló todas lasinexplicables maravillas de Su amor puro, y en el exceso de su amor que había concebido para los hombres de los cuales había recibido nada mas que ingratitud y desprecio. “Esto es más grave para Mí,” dijo, “que todo lo que aguanté en mi Pasión. Si nomás me dieran retorno de amor, no me fijara en todo lo que he hecho por ellos, y haría hasta mas si fuera posible. Pero solo tienen frialdad y desprecio por todos Mis esfuerzos para hacerles el bien. Tú, a lo menos, me puedes dar la felicidad de hacer reparación por su ingratitud, tanto cuanto puedas.”

34. ‘And as I pointed out my inability to do so, He replied: “Behold, this is how I will supply for all that is wanting on your part.” At the same time this Divine Heart opened Itself, and there issued forth a flame so ardent that I thought I should be consumed by it. I was so overwhelmed as to be unable to bear it any longer, and I asked Him to take pity on my weakness. “I shall be your strength”, He said to me, “fear not, but be attentive to My voice and to what I demand of you to make you fit for the accomplishment of My designs.

35. “Y como señale mi inhabilidad para hacerlo, Él replicó, “He aquí, esto es como Yo te supliere todo lo que te falte por tu parte.” Al mismo tiempo este Divino Corazón se abrió a Si mismo, y de allí salió una llama tan ardiente que yo pensé que sería consumida por ella. Estaba tan abrumada que no podía aguantarlo mas, y le pedí que tuviera compasión de mi debilidad. “Yo seré tu fuerza,” me dijo, “no temas, pero hay que estar atenta a Mi voz y a lo que pido de ti para hacerte capaz para el cumplimiento de Mis designios.

36. “ First, you are to receive Me in the Blessed Sacrament as often as obedience will allow, no matter what mortification or humiliation it may entail. Moreover, you are to receive Holy Communion on the first Friday of each month, and every night between Thursday and Friday I will make you partaker of that sorrow unto death which it was My will to suffer in the Garden of Olives. This sorrow will reduce you, without your understanding how, to a kind of agony more bitter than death.

37. “Primero, haz de recibirme en el Santísimo Sacramento tan seguido como la obediencia permita, no le hace la mortificación o humillación que causen. Además, haz de recibir la Santa Comunión en los primeros Viernes de cada mes, y todas las noches entre Jueves y Viernes Yo te haré participante de aquella tristeza hasta la muerte que fue Mi voluntad sufrir en el Jardín de Los Olivos. Esta tristeza te reducirá, sin que lo entiendas como, a una clase de agonía mas amarga que la muerte.

38. To join with Me in the humble prayer which I then offered to My Heavenly Father in agony you are to rise between eleven and twelve o’clock, and remain with Me upon your knees for an hour, with your face to the ground, to appease the anger of My eternal Father, and to ask of Him pardon for sinners. You will thus also share with Me, and in a manner soothe, the bitter grief I suffered when My disciples abandoned Me and I was constrained to reproach them, that they could not watch with Me.

39. Para que me acompañes en la humilde oración que Yo entonces en agonía le ofrecí a Mi Padre Celestial, haz de levantarte entre las once y doce de la noche, y permanecer conmigo de rodillas por una hora, con tu rostro al suelo, para aplacar la ira de mi Eterno Padre, y pedir de Él perdón por los pecadores. También vas a compartir conmigo, y de cierta manera apaciguar, el amargo llanto que Yo sufrí cuando Mis discípulos Me abandonaron y Yo fui restringido a reprocharlos, que no podían velar conmigo.

40. The fourth apparition, the most important, and for that reason called the ‘great’ apparition, took place in 1675, during the octave of Corpus Christi, probably on June 16th. The Saint relates it as follows: La Cuarta Aparicion, la más importante, y por esa razón llamada la ‘gran’ aparición, sucedió en 1675, durante la octava de Corpus Cristi, probablemente en el día 16 de Junio. La Santa lo relata como sigue:

41. ‘One day, during the octave of Corpus Christi, when being before the Blessed Sacrament, I received from my God extraordinary proofs of His love. As I earnestly desired to make some return of love, He said to me: “You could not show Me greater love than by doing what I have already so many times demanded of you.”

42. ‘Un día, durante la octava de Corpus Cristi, al estar antes del Santísimo Sacramento, recibí de mi Dios pruebas extraordinarias de Su amor. Como yo deseaba sinceramente retornar su amor de alguna manera, Él me dijo: “No podrías mostrarme más grande amor que haciendo lo que ya te he pedido muchas veces de ti.”

43. And discovering to me His Divine Heart: “Behold this Heart which has so loved men that It spared nothing, even going so far as to exhaust and consume Itself, to prove to them Its love. And in return I receive from the greater part of men nothing but ingratitude, by the contempt, irreverence, sacrileges and coldness with which they treat Me in this Sacrament of Love.

44. Y descubriéndome Su Divino Corazón, dijo: “He aquí este Corazón que tanto ha amado a los hombres que no se ha detenido de ninguna manera, hasta al punto de agotarse y consumirse, para probarles Su amor. Y en cambio Yo recibo por la mayor parte de los hombres nada mas que ingratitud, por el desprecio, la irreverencia, los sacrilegios, y la frialdad con la cual Me tratan en este Sacramento del Amor.

45. But what is still more painful to Me is that even souls consecrated to Me are acting in this way. Therefore I ask of you that the first Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi be dedicated as a feast in honor of My Heart, and amends be made to It in an Act of Reparation offered to It and by the reception of Holy Communion on that day, to atone for the outrages It has received during the time It has been exposed on the Altars. I promise you that My Heart will open wide to pour forth lavishly the influence of Its Divine love on all who will render and procure for It this honor.

46. Pero lo que es más doloroso para Mí es que hasta las almas consagradas a Mí se portan de esta manera. Por eso te pido que el primer Viernes de la Octava de Corpus Cristi sea dedicada como Fiesta en honor de mi Corazón, y que se hagan enmiendas a Él en un acto de Reparación ofrecido a Él, por la recepción de la Sagrada Comunión en ese día, para expiar por los ultrajes que Él ha recibido durante el tiempo que es expuesto en los Altares. Yo te prometo que mi Corazón se abrirá anchamente para derramar copiosamente la influencia de Su Divino Amor sobre todos los que le rindan y le procuren este honor.

47. “But, O Lord, to whom do you address Yourself? To so frail a creature and poor sinner, whose unworthiness might even be capable of preventing the accomplishment of Your designs? You have so many generous souls to carry out your designs.” “Ah! poor innocent, do you not know that I employ those who are weak to confound those who are strong, and that it is usually in the poor in spirit that I show My power with more splendor, that they may not ascribe anything to themselves?”

48. “Pero, O Señor, ¿A quién te diriges? ¿A tan débil criatura y pobre pecadora, cuya indignidad pueda hasta ser capaz de prevenir el cumplimiento de Tus designios? Tienes tantas almas generosas para llevar a cabo tus designios.” “¡Ah! Pobre inocente, ¿Qué no sabes que Yo empleo a los que son débiles confundir a los que son fuertes, y eso es usualmente en los pobres de espiritu que Yo muestro Mí poder con más esplendor, que no puedan tomar crédito por nada para si mismos?”

49. “Give me then,” I said, “the means of doing what You command me.” Thereupon He said: “Address yourself to My servant (St. Claude de la Columbiere, S.J.), and tell him from Me to do his best to establish this devotion and afford this pleasure to My Divine Heart. He should not lose courage because of the difficulties he will experience; he should know that he is all-powerful who is distrustful of himself and commits himself to Me only.

50. “Concédeme entonces,” le dije, “los medios de hacer lo que Tu me mandas.” Entonces me dijo: “Dirígete a Mi siervo (San Claudio de la Columbiere, S.J.), y dile de Mi parte que haga su mejor para establecer esta devoción y dar este placer a Mi Divino Corazón. Él no debe perder su valor por razón de las dificultades él va a experimentar;él debe saber que él es todo-poderoso que desconfía en si mismo y se entrega a si mismo solamente a Mí.”
