  2. Social Motivation • Your attitudes and goals, the society you live in, and the people you surround yourself with effect what you are motivated to do. • How are you motivated?

Intrinsic Motivation • The desire to perform a behavior effectively and for its own sake. • Intrinsically motivated people work and play in search of employment, interest, self expression, or challenge. • Are you internally motivated to take the AP test to gain the knowledge and challenge yourself by taking a difficult test? If so, you’re intrinsically motivated. • Intrinsic motivation is most effective in advantageous behavior.

  4. Extrinsic Motivation • The desire to behave in certain ways to receive external rewards or avoid threatened punishment. Ex: Grades, Salary • Are you externally motivated to take the AP test solely for the purpose of the grade and a possible college credit? If so, your extrinsically motivated. • Extrinsic motivations are very effective for only a short period of time.

  5. Management Styles • Theory X: Managers believe that employees will work only if rewarded with benefits or threatened with punishment. Ex. Being rewarded with a raise, or extra vacation time. • Theory Y: Managers believe that employees are internally motivated to do good work and policies should encourage this internal motive. Ex. Having a deadline for a task gives you the motivation to complete the task.

  6. Conflicting Motives There are 4 major types of motivational conflicts: • Approach-Approach Conflict: You must choose between two desirable outcomes. Ex: For spring break one of your friends asks you to go to Puerto Rico with them, and another friend asks you to go to the Bahamas with them. • Avoidance-Avoidance Conflict: You must choose between two unattractive outcomes. Ex: Your parents give you the option of cleaning out the garage or mopping the floors.

  7. Conflicting Motives • Approach-Avoidance Conflict: One event or goal has both attractive and unattractive features. Ex: If you’re lactose intolerant the taste of an ice cream cone is appealing, but the outcome of eating it is not. • Multiple Approach-Avoidance Conflict: You must choose between two or more things, each having both attractive and unattractive outcomes. Ex: When choosing which college to attend, University A is best academically but you don’t like the location. University B is close to home, but its too cold. University C is where your bf/gf is going, but its too expensive.

Performing the math challenge itself and knowing you will receive a good grade

You love to play football, but when the fame and fortune are no longer present will you still play? a. Yes, I love football! b. No, Its not worth it without some form of a reward c. Yes, but it will be more difficult to push through

  12. 7. You are asked to head an important project that will bring recognition within the company as well as a hefty bonus, but the task requires lots of tedious work and overtime. Will you still do the project even though you know you’ll become bored with it? a. Yes, if you don’t you may get overlooked the next time a promotion comes up and who knows, it could be fun! b. Receiving rewards of a job such as a raise or promotion c. A healthy mix of both
