Hancock Leadership Class of 2008 Special Kids Therapy Multi - Sensory Room For most children and adults, the senses naturally work together to provide fundamental awareness of their body and the surrounding world. This is called stimulation. Some children and adults have difficulty in this process. To provide the comfort of stimulation that most of us take for granted, a multi-sensory room can provide a place where anyone can feel comfortable and in control. Multi-sensory rooms are environments in which stimulating activities and experiences are used to increase awareness and positive behaviors for individuals with severe sensory impairment or Neurological challenges. Multi-sensory rooms have been shown to enhance skills such as sensory development (hearing, sight, taste, smell and touch), hand/eye coordination, cause and effect, language development and relaxation. Multi-sensory rooms may include the following fundamental components to promote intellectual activity and relaxation: Lighting effects, bubble lamps, star panels, mirror balls. Sensory activities such as blowing bubbles, finger painting and play dough. Tactile experiences like bubble wrap, sandpaper and feathers. And “soft play” where special environments are created for individuals with profound disabilities, allowing for different seating and comfortable positioning options to expend energy physically without harming themselves. Special Kids Therapy has been working with special needs children and their families since 2001 and sees the design and implementation of a multi-sensory room as key to being able to serve this often-overlooked population. A surprising number of children, over 1,100 in our community would potentially benefit from such a facility. With Findlay-Hancock County being recognized as among the top 100 places for young people, the 2008 Hancock Leadership class is dedicated to strengthening that designation by building a space where special needs children can develop in a way that is most beneficial to them. We see the SKTMulti-Sensory Room as an opportunity to assist underserved children being able to learn, grow, play and enjoy our community the same way as any typical child.
