CPR RULES • TAKE IT SERIOUSLY…YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU OR SOMEONE ELSES LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT. • ANY WISECRACKS DURING THE VIDEO OR MANIKIN PRACTICE WILL RESULT IN DISCIPLINARY ACTION. • ANY VIOLATIONS OF CLASSROOM RULES WILL RESULTS IN REMOVAL FROM CLASS, CERTIFICATION FAILURE, AND WRITTEN WORK TO BE COMPLETED IN THE MEDIA CENTER
ADULT CPR • OBJECTIVES: • TO IDENTIFY LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCIES AND ACT ACCORDINGLY • TO CORRECTLY DEMONSTRATE ADULT CPR TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES • TO PASS RED CROSS CERTIFICATION TESTS TO BECOME CERTIFIED.
C – CARDIO (HEART) • P – PULMONARY (LUNGS) • R – RESUSCITATION (TO RESTORE)
DIFFERENT TYPES OF CPR • INFANT: BIRTH TO 1 YEAR • CHILD: 1 YEAR TO 11 YEARS • ADULT: 12 YEARS AND OLDER
EMERGENCY ACTION STEPS(THE 3 C’S) • CHECK – THE SCENE FOR SAFETY - THEN CHECK THE PERSON • CALL – 911/EMS • CARE – FOR LIFE THREATENING INJURIES
LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCIES INCLUDE: • UNCONSCIOUS • LACK OF OR TROUBLE BREATHING • CHOKING • PERSISITENT CHEST PAIN • NO SIGNS OF LIFE • SEVERE BLEEDING • SEVERE BURNS • SHOCK • SEIZURES
A CONSCIOUS CHOKING VICTIM: • ASK THE VICTIM IF THEY ARE CHOKING, THEN ASK IF YOU CAN HELP THEM. • STAND BEHIND THE VICTIM, PLACING YOUR FOOT BETWEEN THE VICTIM’S FEET , BRACING THE VICTIM AGAINST YOUR HIP. • PLACE YOUR FIST (THUMB DOWN) INTO THE AREA JUST ABOVE THE BELLY BUTTON AND BELOW THE RIBS. • BEGIN GIVING 5 ABDOMINAL THRUSTS (INWARD AND UPWARD), THEN GIVE 5 BACK BLOWS (BETWEEN THE SHOULDER BLADES), UNTIL THE OBJECT IS REMOVED.
CHECKING AN UNCONSCIOUS VICTIM: • TAP AND SHOUT – “ARE YOU OKAY?” • ASSESS THE VICTIM WITH THE ABC’S: • A– OPEN AIRWAY – HEAD TILT – CHIN LIFT • B – LOOK , LISTEN, & FEEL FOR BREATHS • C- LOOK FOR SIGNS OF CIRCULATION / LIFE(MOVEMENT, COLORING) • CHECKING FOR NO LONGER THAN 10 SECONDS.
*** AFTER YOU ASSESS THE SITUATION, YOU WILL KNOW WHETHER TO PERFORM RESCUE BREATHING, CPR, CHOKING CPR, OR JUST MONITOR THE VICTIM ***
INATIONAL CHECKHAS NO SIGNS OF LIFE • CHECK THE VICTIM (LOOK-LISTEN-FEEL) FOR BREATING FOR NO LONGER THAN 10 SECONDS. • IF NOT BREATHING AND NO SIGNS OF LIFE, GIVE 30 CONPRESSIONS. • TILT HEAD BACK (LIFT CHIN), PINCH NOSE SHUT • GIVE 2 RESCUE BREATH, THEN BACK TO 30 COMPRESSIONS. • AFTER 2 MINUTE, RECHECK VICTIM (LOOK-LISTEN-FEEL) • WHAT IF THE BREATHS DO NOT GO IN? RETILT, TRY AGAIN, STILL WILL NOT GO IN … CHOKING.
SIGNS / SYMPTOMS HEART ATTACK • PERSISTENT CHEST PAIN /PRESSURE • CHEST PAIN SPREADING TO SHOULDER, NECK, ARMS AND JAW • TROUBLE BREATHING / SHORTNESS OF BREATH • DIZZY, LIGHTHEADED, FAINTING • PALE, BLUE-ISH SKIN • SWEATING • DENIAL (INDIGESTION)
IMPORTANT STEPS FOR CARDIAC SURVIVAL • EARLY RECOGNITION OF SIGNALS • CALLING 911 • IMMEDIATE CPR • USE AN AED
CPR STEPS • CHECK THE SCENE AND THE VICTIM • CALL 911 • TAP AND SHOUT “ARE YOU OKAY?” • LOOK – LISTEN – FEEL (FOR ABC’S) ** IF NO SIGNS OF LIFE BEGIN CPR** • 30 COMPRESSIONS, 2 RESCUE BREATHS ** WHAT IF BREATHS DO NOT GO IN? RETILT, IF BREATH STILL WILL NOT GO IN, ASSUME CHOKING**
REPEAT CYCLE UNTIL… • EMS ARRIVES AND TAKES OVER • THE VICTIM BEGINS TO BREATH OR SHOW SIGNS OF LIFE • YOU BECOME EXHAUSTED • THE SCENE BECOMES UNSAFE
UNCONSCIOUS CHOKINGCARE IS SIMILAR TO CPR WITH AN ADDITIONAL STEP BETWEEN COMPRESSIONS AND BREATHS • BEGIN YOUR ASSESSMENT STEPS (3 C’S, ABC’S, LLF) • IF YOUR BREATHS DO NOT GO IN, RETILT THE HEAD AND TRY BREATHS AGAIN… IF THEY STILL DO NOT GO IN YOU ASSUME THE VICTIM HAS A BLOCKED AIRWAY (CHOCKING) • ONCE LEARNING ABOUT THE BLOCKED AIRWAY START WITH 30 COMPRESSIONS, FOREIGN OBJECT CHECK (LOOK IN THE MOUTH). IF YOU SEE THE OBJECT IN THE MOUTH, THEN DO A FINGER SWEEP, SWEEPING TOWARDS YOU. IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE OBJECT, THEN GIVE 2 BREATHS. • AFTER GIVING 2 BREATHS, IF THEY GO IN, CHECK FOR SIGNS OF LIFE, IF NOT, 30 COMPRESSIONS, FOREIGN OBJECT CHECK AND BREATHS, UNTIL THE AIRWAY IS CLEAR. • AFTER THE OBJECT IS REMOVED AND 2 BREATHS GO IN, THEN REASSESS THE VICTIM TO SEE IF THERE IS SIGNS OF LIFE.
Review • A person who is suffering from pain and discomfort could be having a heart attack • When you give rescue breaths you should give a breath that last about one second • Check for signs of life for no more than10 seconds • A conscious chocking adult give 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrust. • Why do you stop giving CPR
Review Continued • In CPR how many cycles should you give in 2 minutes? 5 • 30 compressions 2 breaths is one cycle of CPR. • What is the purpose of CPR?
