Tang and Song Politcal: Tang Song • Known as the “The Golden Age“ • Reunited China and brought peace and prosperity • Government took census, gave examinations over Confucian text for positions, and built public works. • Conquered Korea and Manchuria • Emerged in the South • Built upon the Achievements of the Tang • Song China was most populous and advanced civilization of its day • greatest threat was the northern tribes. Song allied with the Mongols. • Mongols soon overran the Empire-Yuan Dynasty
Economic: Tang Song • Revived feudal relationships • Under early Tang, every adult received fixed amount of land from government • Peasants performed hard labor for the government and paid taxes in the form of grain and silk. • Benefited in the Silk Road; trade with Persia, Arabia, Japan and the Byzantine Empire. • First paper currency(made it possible to pay taxes with money instead of grain) • Minted strings of standardized coins • Eliminated forced labor for the emperor • All of this brought about a large increase in farm production=greater wealth for China. • Grand Canal used to ship grain within china • Silk Road
