Setting the Stage • Decline of the Roman Era ushered in the Middle Ages (medieval period) • New institutions emerged to replace the fallen Roman Empire. • While China and Southwest Asia flourished Medieval Europe remained fragmented • Germanic invaders trigger changes in Western Europe • By the 5th century they had overran the western half of the Roman Empire
Changes • Invasions and constant warfare sparked new trends in government, economy, and culture • Three factors led to this change • 1. Disruption of Trade • 2. Downfall of Cities • 3. Population Shifts- from towns to rural • After the Fall of Rome we have a decline in Learning • The Germanic invaders could not read or write. • Very few people except Church officials and priests were literate.
Decline in Learning • Among the learned the knowledge of Greek was very rare • Greek literature, science, and philosophy is all but lost • Germanic tribes had a rich oral tradition of legends and songs but no written language. • A major loss of a Common Language
