  1. Mapping What kinds of maps exist? Where can I find different maps?

  2. Where am I going? • When you think of a map, you probably think of a map...you know, those things that show you how to get somewhere. • There are plenty of resources for those... • Mapquest • Rand McNally • AAA

  3. Mapping • Surprise! How to get somewhere is not the only use for a map! • Make a list of 20 different types of maps you think you would be able to find on the internet.

  4. Topographic Maps • Topographic maps can show many different pieces of information. Check out the maps for Columbiana County. • http://www.topozone.com/states/Ohio.asp?county=Columbiana • What is the location of our high school?

  6. Elevation • This is an interactive relief map which indicates the elevations of the United States. • http://www.nationalatlas.gov/dynamic/an_relief.html • What is the highest point?

  8. Volcano Information • This is an informative site about the age and types of volcanoes. When you find it, look at the picture and different map types, as well as its type, elevation, and age.

  9. Satellite Images • Satellite images are another way we study the Earth. They are helpful in creating some of the other types of maps you have seen. • http://geology.com/satellite/

More than Earth’s Surface • So far, we have looked at • Topographic maps which show many kinds of information, including elevation. • Relief maps which create a more 3-D version of elevation • Surface features such as volcanoes • Satellite images which depict Earth’s suface There is more to mapping than Earth’s surface...

  13. A Tapestry of Time • This site maps the ages of the rocks based on the geologic time scale. • http://tapestry.usgs.gov/default.html • Click on the map and check out the ages of the rocks in Ohio

  14. Invasive Species Tracking • This site shows, by years, the populations of zebra mussels, which have caused many problems in waterways. • http://www.nationalatlas.gov/dynamic/an_zm.html • Where did the problem start? • What year had the most widespread population of zebra mussels?

  15. Vegetation Growth • This map shows the vegetative coverage across the United States during different months. • http://www.nationalatlas.gov/dynamic/dyn_green.html • Using the tabs, watch what happens as you move from January to December. What do you notice about the colors around Ohio?
