Introduction: Why Of Mice and Men? • Of Mice and Men was written by John Steinbeck and is considered one of the great American novels. Before you can jump into the novel, you must understand some of the issues discussed in the book and the background that shaped the novella. This WebQuest will help you learn more about John Steinbeck as a person and a writer, California in the 1930s, Migrant Workers, the Great Depression, FDR and the New Deal, and the history Behind Of Mice and Men. • In this WebQuest, you will research a topic related to Of Mice and Men and create a brochure to share your findings with your classmates. Task: Historical Brochure (40 points) • DIRECTIONS: In order to fully understand history, I believe we must actively explore it. For this assignment, you will create a 4-sided (not including citation slide) brochure that contains information about your assigned topic. You are required to fill 3 pages with information and pictures, while also creating an appropriate title side that will serve as the face of your pamphlet. • Other requirements: • At least 3 pictures need to be included in your brochure • At least 5facts must be included and described in your brochure • On the last side, cite all sources from which you obtained information (including pictures) in your brochure. • You should have information from and cite at least two sources. • DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. • Be creative! • You will be given time in class to work on your brochure. What you do not finish in 90 minutes will be homework, and each of you will be expected to share information from your brochure during the next class period before a peer audience. Process • 1. First, I will give you a topic to research. • 2. When you have been assigned a topic, you can start to research and answer the questions linked at the bottom of this slide. • 3. After you have explored the websites and answered the questions, put the information together as you design your historical brochure with your partner. You must address all the questions on each slide in your brochure. • 4. Think carefully about how you want your brochure to look. • 5. Be thorough. Do not just list the facts that you find. Elaborate on any information with which your peers may not be familiar. • 6. Double check that your project meets all the requirements. • 7. Standards of Learning • This WebQuest was designed for 10th grade English students to participate in at the beginning of an Of Mice and Men unit. It was designed to take place over an entire 90-minute class period with student laptops.
