CHAMPS RED NO TALKING! wednesday Do Now
Homework • HW: Exponents Review (Roots & fractional powers) Odd
How will I meet the objective today? Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of fractional exponents by applying the correct exponent rule to simplify the expression on the exit slip with 80% accuracy (4/5 correct) Rate Yourself on the objective! 4 - I can teach today’s lesson 3 - I understand most of today’s lesson. 2 - I only understand some of today’s lesson. 1 – I don’t understand today’s lesson.

Rational Exponents Radicals (also called roots) are directly related to exponents. All radicals (roots) can be written in a different format without a radical symbol. This different format uses a rational (fractional) exponent.
Intermediate Algebra MTH04 Rational Exponents When the exponent of the radicand (expression under the radical symbol) is one, the rational exponent form of a radical looks like this: **Remember that the index, n, is a whole number equal to or greater than 2.
base Since the exponent is ___ the index of the root would be _____. I know the ___ root is ______ because _____ times itself ___ times is ______ Rational Exponents Examples: ** When a base has a fractional exponent, do not think of the exponent in the same way as when it is a whole number.
Since the exponent is ___ the index of the root would be _____. I know the ___ root is ______ because _____ times itself ___ times is ______ Rational Exponents Example:
Since the exponent is ___ the index of the root would be _____. I know the ___ root is ______ because _____ times itself ___ times is ______ You Try 1/3 ½ = 7 = 3 1. 49 2. 27 3. 100 4. 16 5. 144 6. 64 7. 400 8. 10000 ½ ¼ = 10 = 2 1/3 ½ = 4 = 12 ¼ ½ = 10 = 20
Intermediate Algebra MTH04 Rational Exponents For any exponent of the radicand, the rational exponent form of a radical looks like this:
Intermediate Algebra MTH04 Rational Exponents Examples:
5/3 Ex. 2 8 = (3√8) = 2 = 32 5 5
You Try 2/3 3/2 = 100 = 64 1. 162. 1000 3. 324. 49 5. 64 6. 81 4/5 3/2 = 16 = 343 2/3 ¾ = 16 = 27
