Feeding • Most animals do not absorb food; instead they ingest it. • Animals range from filter feeders and herbivores to carnivores, and from commensalites to parasites. • All animals have developed different mouth structures and different digestive systems based on food and environmental adaptations.

  7. The small intestine is where nutrients are absorbed from chyme (chewed –up food from the stomach). Special structures in the small intestine called villi help absorb the essential nutrients from chyme. Circular folds Epithelial cells Villi Capillaries Lacteal Vein Artery Small intestine Why does the small intestine have circular folds? Hint: the mitochondria and chloroplast have folds for the same reason.
